Clunk when you brake: caliper hardware, mounts or a worn joint

The one that is usually normal

A single clunk on the first brake application after the car has been parked, particularly overnight or in damp conditions.

That is usually surface rust on the discs breaking away as the pads first grip, and the pads seating into their carrier. It happens once and not again.

The check you can do

With the car safely raised and supported:

  4. Look for missing clips and shims.

A clunk plus a pull under braking means uneven braking force — a genuine safety issue: car pulls when braking.

A clunk plus vibration under braking suggests warped or unevenly worn discs: brake disc warping and vibration.

In what order

  1. Note whether it also happens over bumps without braking.
  2. Note whether it is once after parking or every time.
  3. Raise and support the car and check for play at each wheel.
  4. Inspect caliper hardware — pins, clips, shims, bolts.
  5. Check the mounts if the knock is felt through the floor rather than the wheel.
  6. Have suspension joints inspected on a ramp if play is found.
