Vibration under braking: why discs do not actually warp
Discs almost never distort from heat. The real cause of judder, the role of uneven pad deposits, and why skimming does not always help.
“The discs are warped” is the standard explanation for steering judder under braking. It is almost always wrong, which is exactly why the problem often returns after replacement.
What actually happens
A cast iron disc does not distort from heat in normal use — that needs temperatures a road car never reaches.
The real mechanism: in use, a pad leaves a thin layer of its own material on the disc. Normally that layer is even. If it lays down unevenly, a thickness variation appears — and on every rotation the pad meets a raised patch. That is what is felt as judder.
What causes an uneven layer:
- Holding the pedal after hard braking — a hot pad sits on one spot of a hot disc and leaves a deposit.
- Parking with wet, hot brakes — plus localised rust.
- Mixing different pad materials without bedding them in.
- A sticking caliper — the pad dragging permanently.
Why this matters in practice
If the cause is an uneven layer rather than geometry, then:
Skimming the disc helps — it removes the uneven material.
But without fixing the cause the judder returns. So skimming without checking the caliper is a temporary measure.
Properly bedding in new pads is not a formality: a few dozen moderate stops without coming to rest builds an even layer.
The second cause: wheel torque
The most underrated cause here, and the cheapest to prevent.
Tightening “by feel”, or crosswise in no particular order, distorts the disc’s hub face. The distortion is microns, and that is enough for noticeable judder.
Overtightened wheels — the typical result of a fast tyre bay using an impact gun with no torque limit.
The right way: a torque wrench, the specified figure, and a star pattern.
The third cause: the hub
Rust or dirt between hub and disc — the disc seats crooked. A single grain of grit produces judder.
Bearing wear — play that is felt precisely under braking; covered in the humming and bearings article.
So when discs are replaced the mating face is cleaned back to bare metal — a mandatory part of the job, not an extra.
How to tell them apart
Judder through the steering — front axle.
Judder through the pedal and body — rear.
Vibration at speed without braking — that is not the discs but wheel balance or suspension; covered in the steering vibration article.
Judder only after a long descent — overheating and possibly old brake fluid; covered in the brake fluid article.
What diagnostics sees
A scanner does not measure judder, but it sees the neighbourhood.
The four wheel speeds in live data — instability on one wheel indicates play or a damaged sensor.
ABS codes — heavy judder distorts the sensor signal.
