Vibration at idle and a thump when pulling away: worn engine mounts
An engine mount is a cheap part whose wear gets blamed on the engine and gearbox. The symptoms, two checks without a ramp, and why hydraulic mounts fail quietly.
An engine mount is one of the cheapest parts whose wear is regularly mistaken for an engine or gearbox fault. The symptoms genuinely overlap, so checking pays for itself before an expensive search begins.
What a mount does
It holds the engine in the bay and at the same time damps vibration, stopping it reaching the body.
The second function matters more than the first. A split mount rarely causes an engine to fall anywhere. But the vibration it was meant to absorb arrives in the cabin undiminished.
Wear symptoms
Vibration at idle that is noticeably stronger with a gear selected on an automatic than in neutral. That is the most characteristic sign — the load on the mount changes and the vibration changes with it.
Vibration with the air conditioning on. The compressor adds load, and a worn mount stops absorbing it.
A thump when selecting drive and reverse — the engine moves more than it should.
A dull knock when pulling away or lifting off sharply.
Vibration in the wheel and seat in one narrow rev band — typically around 700–900 rpm at idle.
Two checks without a ramp
First: rock it in gear. With a helper: handbrake on, foot on the brake, on an automatic select D then R while watching the engine.
Normal is a noticeable but brief rock that settles. Worn is a long oscillation with visible amplitude, sometimes with a knock.
Second: neutral versus in gear. Stand alongside and watch the engine while selecting. Substantial movement for a minimal change in load is a mount.
Both checks are done with the car secured, and that is the entire safety protocol: handbrake, footbrake, nobody standing in front of the car.
Hydraulic mounts fail differently
On many modern cars mounts are fluid filled and sometimes electronically controlled as well.
The sign of a leak is fluid traces on and around the mount body. The rubber can still look intact, which is exactly why a visual check produces false negatives.
A controlled mount may have a connector and a valve. When it fails, vibration appears only in certain conditions — for example only at a warm idle — and that misleads.
The practical conclusion: intact-looking rubber does not mean a healthy mount.
How not to confuse it with the engine
This is the main source of wasted money, and it separates simply.
Misfires produce rough running with fluctuating revs and usually a Check Engine light. A mount does not change revs — it changes only how much vibration reaches the body.
What to check with a scanner before dismantling:
- Misfire codes — P0300 and the per-cylinder ones; covered in the misfire article.
- Per-cylinder misfire counters — zeros alongside clear vibration point strongly at mechanics, not ignition.
- Idle stability — steady revs with clear vibration mean the engine is running fine and the body is shaking.
That logic saves the most money: steady revs plus strong vibration means look at mounts, not spark plugs.
What delay costs
- Load on the remaining mounts — they wear out faster in turn.
- Cracks in the exhaust — the engine moves while the exhaust is fixed.
- Damaged hoses and wiring chafing against the body.
- Accelerated driveshaft joint wear from changed shaft angles.
In short
- A mount damps vibration; a split one passes it straight into the cabin.
- Different vibration in neutral and in gear is the most characteristic sign.
- Intact rubber does not mean a healthy hydraulic mount: look for fluid traces.
- Steady revs with strong vibration point at mounts, not ignition.
- A worn mount takes the exhaust, hoses, and driveshaft joints with it.
