Creaking when turning at walking pace: bushes, strut mount or joint
A creak that appears at parking speeds and vanishes above walking pace is suspension rubber protesting, and locating it needs only a helper and a torch.
Creaks are rubber or plastic components moving against each other under load with insufficient lubrication. They appear at low speed because that is when the suspension is being twisted slowly enough for stick-slip to occur.

The bounce test
The most productive first step, and it needs nothing but a helper.
With the car parked, push down firmly on each corner and release, repeatedly. Listen at that corner.
Then, with a helper turning the steering lock to lock while stationary, listen at each front wheel arch.

The usual causes
Strut top mount bearing
The most common cause of a creak specifically when turning.
The strut top mount includes a bearing that lets the strut rotate with the steering. When it dries out or corrodes, it sticks and releases — which is a creak.
The tell: turning the steering with the car stationary reproduces it exactly.
Suspension bushes
Rubber bushes twist as the suspension moves. When the rubber hardens with age or the bonding fails, they creak.
Anti-roll bar bushes are frequent offenders, and they produce a creak over uneven surfaces at low speed.
Bush wear also causes geometry to drift, which shows as tyre wear: suspension bushes wear symptoms and inner edge tyre wear.
Ball joints
Worn joints creak and eventually knock. A knock as well as a creak is more urgent, because a failed ball joint separates the wheel from the suspension.
Spring seat
The rubber isolator between spring and seat perishes, and the spring moves against metal.
Constant velocity joints
A clicking rather than a creak, and specifically on tight turns under power. Different noise, different component: clicking noise when turning and CV joint boot replacement.
Not suspension at all
Two common false leads.
Interior trim. Plastic panels moving against each other as the body flexes. Very common in cold weather when plastics contract, and often mistaken for suspension.
The seat. Seat frames and runners creak, and the noise arrives at your ears from very close by.
Test: have a passenger listen from outside while you drive slowly over uneven ground. Noises that vanish when heard from outside are inside the car.
Weather dependence
Creaks that appear in cold weather and fade in summer are usually rubber or plastic that has hardened — a genuine early stage of wear rather than a fault.
Creaks that appear after rain and disappear when dry point at a dried-out bearing or bush where water is temporarily acting as a lubricant.
Creaks that appear after washing the car are the same mechanism in reverse.
Do not just spray it
Silicone or penetrating spray on a creaking bush usually silences it temporarily. The noise returns, and in the meantime the wear continues.
Worse, some sprays attack rubber, accelerating the failure they were meant to mask.
Use the noise as the diagnostic signal it is.
What it costs to ignore
A creak alone is not dangerous. What it indicates can be:
- Worn bushes let geometry drift, which wears tyres: wheel balancing vs alignment.
- Worn top mounts affect steering feel and can affect alignment.
- A worn ball joint eventually separates.
A creak that has become a knock is a different urgency.
Sequence
- Bounce each corner and listen.
- Turn the steering lock to lock stationary, listening at the front wheel arches.
- Have a passenger listen from outside to rule out interior trim.
- Note weather dependence.
- Inspect the boots on ball joints and CV joints for splits.
- Get it inspected on a ramp if a knock accompanies the creak.
