Rattling over bumps: how to find the loose part
Rattles are frustrating because they only happen while you are driving. A systematic bounce test in the driveway finds most of them in twenty minutes.
A rattle over bumps means something is loose enough to move and hard enough to make noise when it hits its neighbour. The list of candidates is long but the search is systematic.
Locate it first
Before diagnosing, narrow the position. Have a passenger listen from different seats, or drive with one window down at a time.
- Front or rear?
- Left or right?
- Underneath, or from inside the cabin?
That alone eliminates most of the list.
What the character tells you
Sharp metallic knock, one per bump. Suspension. A worn link, bush or mount.
Rattle like coins in a tin, continuous over rough surfaces. Exhaust heat shield. Extremely common and usually cheap.
Dull thud, felt as well as heard. A worn top mount or a failed damper.
Rattle only over small sharp bumps, not big ones. Anti-roll bar drop links, almost every time.
Rattle from inside the cabin. Trim, a loose item in a door pocket, or a seat mechanism. Annoying, harmless.
Clunk when turning as well as over bumps. Steering or driveshaft rather than suspension — see clicking noise when turning.
The driveway bounce test
Park on level ground, engine off, and work through the corners.
1. Bounce each corner. Push down hard on the wing above each wheel and release. The car should settle in one, at most two, movements. Continued bouncing means the damper has failed — shock absorber wear test.
2. Listen while bouncing. A knock during the bounce localises the noise to that corner immediately, and this is the single most productive minute of the whole exercise.
3. Grab the anti-roll bar drop links and try to move them. Any play at all means replacement. They are the most common cause of light rattles and among the cheapest parts on the car.
4. Tap the exhaust heat shields. They rust through at the spot welds and the loose section buzzes. Related: exhaust rattle and heat shields.
5. Check the exhaust hangers. Perished rubber lets the system swing and hit the underbody.
What is usually loose
Anti-roll bar drop links
Small ball joints connecting the anti-roll bar to the suspension. They wear quickly, they are cheap, and they produce exactly the small-sharp-bump rattle. Start here.
Suspension bushes
Rubber perishes and cracks, letting the arm move in its mounting. Produces a duller knock and often vague steering with it — suspension bushes wear symptoms.
Strut top mounts
Bearing wear produces a knock over bumps and often a creak or graunch when turning at low speed — squeaking suspension noise.
Failed dampers
Internal wear allows the piston to move without control. The bounce test finds these.
Exhaust heat shields and mountings
Thin steel, spot welded, sitting in the wettest and saltiest part of the car. Very common, very cheap. A large worm-drive clamp around a loose shield is a legitimate permanent repair.
Loose brake components
An anti-rattle clip that fell out during a pad change, or a brake pad shifting in the carrier. Rattles over bumps and quietens when you touch the brakes — that is close to diagnostic.
Things in the boot
Genuinely. The jack, the wheel brace, or the spare not clamped down. Check before paying anyone.
What made it start
Recent events narrow it considerably.
- After a pothole? Bent component or displaced bush — pothole damage, what to check.
- After a tyre change? Wheel weights, or the spare not secured.
- After brake work? Missing anti-rattle clip or shim.
- After suspension work? Bolts not torqued to spec, or a bush installed unloaded.
- After winter? Corrosion on heat shields and exhaust hangers — salt and corrosion protection.
Where a scan tool is honest about its limits
This is worth saying plainly: rattles are mechanical, and OBD-II will not find them. Suspension and exhaust hardware have no sensors. No code exists for a worn drop link.
What a scan contributes is ruling things out and catching the consequences:
- If the rattle comes with an ABS or traction lamp, a wheel speed sensor may have been damaged by the same event.
- If it accompanies a vibration at speed, compare wheel speeds — car shakes at motorway speed.
- If a heat shield is rattling because the exhaust is overheating, there may be an underlying emissions fault such as P0420.

Do not dismiss it as cosmetic
A rattle is a part moving in a way it was not designed to. Some are trivial — a heat shield is noise and nothing more. Others are not: a failing ball joint rattles before it separates, and a separated ball joint at speed is a serious event.
If the noise came with any change in steering feel, braking or stability, treat it as urgent rather than annoying.

- Anti-roll bar drop links: $40–120 per pair fitted.
- Suspension bushes: $100–400.
- Strut top mounts: $150–400 per axle.
- Dampers: $200–600 per axle.
