Vibration at idle: mounts, misfire or a dirty throttle body

Steady RPM: engine and gearbox mounts

Mounts are rubber, sometimes hydraulic, and they wear out. A collapsed or split mount transmits normal engine vibration directly into the body.

Signatures:

  • Vibration worse in Drive with the brake applied, better in Neutral.
  • A clunk when engaging Drive or Reverse: clunk when shifting into drive.
  • Vibration worse with the air conditioning on, which adds load.
  • A visible shudder of the engine when blipping the throttle.

Test: with the handbrake on and the car in Drive, watch the engine from outside. Excessive movement is a mount.

Misfire

Carbon around the plate changes the airflow at closed throttle, and the ECU’s learned position no longer matches reality.

Unmetered air matters most at idle, when total airflow is smallest.
