Vibration at idle: mounts, misfire or a dirty throttle body
A car that shakes at a standstill and smooths out when moving has a short list of causes, and one live-data reading tells you which.
An engine at idle produces the least torque and the most noticeable pulsation. Anything that makes it run unevenly, or that transmits its vibration into the body instead of absorbing it, shows up here first.
Related: fluctuating idle RPM causes.
First: is the RPM steady?
The question that splits the diagnosis in two, and it takes ten seconds with an adapter.
Steady RPM with vibration points at mounts. The engine is running evenly and the vibration is being transmitted rather than absorbed.
Fluctuating RPM with vibration points at how the engine is running: misfire, air metering, or fuel.
The tachometer is too damped to show this. Use the live data value.
Steady RPM: engine and gearbox mounts
Mounts are rubber, sometimes hydraulic, and they wear out. A collapsed or split mount transmits normal engine vibration directly into the body.
Signatures:
- Vibration worse in Drive with the brake applied, better in Neutral.
- A clunk when engaging Drive or Reverse: clunk when shifting into drive.
- Vibration worse with the air conditioning on, which adds load.
- A visible shudder of the engine when blipping the throttle.
Test: with the handbrake on and the car in Drive, watch the engine from outside. Excessive movement is a mount.
Hydraulic mounts fail by leaking their fluid, and a wet mount is a definite finding.

Misfire
Even a misfire too mild to set a code produces idle vibration.
Read misfire counters per cylinder — they update live and name the cylinder immediately, long before a code appears: how the misfire monitor works and P0301 to P0304 cylinder misfire.
A dirty throttle body
Carbon around the plate changes the airflow at closed throttle, and the ECU’s learned position no longer matches reality.
Cleaning requires a subsequent adaptation relearn — doing one without the other often makes idle worse: P2119 throttle body range/performance and P2176 throttle idle position not learned.
A vacuum leak
Unmetered air matters most at idle, when total airflow is smallest.
The signature is in the fuel trims: strongly positive at idle, near zero at 2500 rpm: P2279 intake air system leak.
Carbon on intake valves
On direct injection engines, deposits make cylinders breathe unevenly. Idle vibration that has developed gradually over years, with misfires that survive new coils and plugs, points here: GDI carbon buildup.
Idle control
P0506 idle speed lower than expected and P0505 idle air control diagnostics.
The load test
Idle vibration often changes with load, and how it changes is diagnostic.
| Condition | If vibration worsens |
|---|---|
| In Drive vs Neutral | Mounts, or transmission drag |
| Air conditioning on | Mounts, or the engine struggling with load |
| Steering at full lock | Mounts, or power steering load |
| Electrical load on | Charging system load, or a marginal idle |
Worse under every load suggests the engine is short of torque generally — a misfire or a mixture problem.
Worse only in Drive suggests mounts.
The specific case of cylinder deactivation
On engines with it, vibration at a light cruise rather than at idle points at the deactivation system: P3400 cylinder deactivation system.
What to log
| Parameter | What to watch |
|---|---|
| Engine RPM | Steady or hunting? |
| Misfire counters per cylinder | Any accumulation at all |
| Short and long-term fuel trims | Leak signature |
| Throttle position at idle | Higher than expected means carbon |
| Calculated load at idle | Higher than expected means drag |
Where to start
- Watch live RPM at idle — steady or fluctuating?
- Read misfire counters even with no code.
- Test in Neutral versus Drive, and with loads on and off.
- Check fuel trims at idle and 2500 rpm.
- Inspect the mounts for splits and leaking fluid.
- Check throttle position at closed throttle.
Watch RPM and misfire counters at idle while switching the air conditioning on — an ELM327 adapter and the free tier of the app are all it takes. Whether the RPM holds steady tells you which half of this article applies.
