P3400: cylinder deactivation system and the lifters that fail
Shutting off half the cylinders saves fuel and adds a mechanism that fails in a specific, expensive way. Oil condition is what decides which you get.
Cruising at a steady speed needs a fraction of an engine’s capacity. Cylinder deactivation exploits that by shutting off some cylinders entirely — closing their valves and stopping fuel — so the remaining ones work harder and more efficiently.
Chrysler calls it MDS, GM calls it AFM or DFM, Honda calls it VCM, and VAG calls it COD. The principle is shared.

How it works, and where it breaks
Deactivation is usually achieved with special hydraulic lifters. Oil pressure, controlled by a solenoid, collapses the lifter so it no longer opens its valve.
That mechanism has fine internal parts, and it depends entirely on clean oil at the right pressure.
When a lifter fails, it can fail collapsed — the valve never opens, that cylinder never fires, and the misfire is permanent. In the worst case a failed lifter damages the camshaft lobe, which turns a lifter job into a cylinder head job.
Oil is the whole story
This is the practical point of the article.
The mechanism is hydraulically actuated by engine oil through small passages. It is therefore sensitive to:
- Oil condition. Sludge from extended intervals blocks the passages and the solenoid screens.
- Oil viscosity. These systems are designed around a specific grade. Thicker oil does not actuate the lifters correctly.
- Oil level. Low level means pressure loss at exactly the wrong moment.
- Oil pressure. Marginal pressure at hot idle affects deactivation before it affects anything else.
On an engine with cylinder deactivation, the oil change interval is not a suggestion. Vehicles with documented short-interval oil changes have markedly fewer of these failures than those on extended intervals.

Symptoms
- A misfire on specific cylinders — precisely the ones the system deactivates: P0305 to P0308 misfire cylinders 5 to 8.
- A tick or tapping from the top of the engine.
- Rough running at cruise but smooth under acceleration, because deactivation only engages at light load.
- Vibration at a steady speed that disappears when you accelerate.
That last pattern is characteristic. A vibration that appears only at light cruise and vanishes under load points directly at this system.

Distinguishing it from an ordinary misfire
An ordinary misfire is present regardless of load. A deactivation fault appears only when the system tries to engage.

Repair options
Solenoid and screen cleaning — worthwhile when the fault is intermittent and oil condition was poor.
Lifter replacement — the common repair. Involves removing the cylinder head or at least the valve train on most engines.
Camshaft replacement — if a failed lifter has damaged a lobe. Significantly more expensive.
Disabling the system — commonly discussed. Devices exist that keep the engine in all-cylinder mode. It reduces the risk of the failure and costs fuel economy, and on some engines it is a legitimate preventive choice for a high-mileage vehicle. Note that it changes the ECU calibration and may be detectable: ECU remap detection.
Buying used
On any engine with cylinder deactivation:
- Ask for oil change records with dates and specification. This is the single best predictor.
- Listen at idle for a tick from the valve train: ticking noise at idle.
- Drive at a steady light cruise and feel for vibration.
- Read misfire counters after that drive.
- Check for stored history of these codes.
