P0506: idle speed lower than expected and the stall that follows
The ECU is holding the throttle where idle should be correct, and the engine is turning slower than that. Something is taking torque, or something is restricting air.
Idle is a closed loop. The ECU has a target RPM, it measures actual RPM, and it adjusts airflow to close the gap. P0506 means it ran out of adjustment in one direction: it asked for more air and the engine still turns too slowly.
The mirror-image code is P0507 idle speed higher than expected, and the causes are almost entirely different.
The symptom you will notice
A stall when you come to a stop, or when you put the air conditioning on, or when the steering is at full lock.
All three add load at exactly the moment the engine has least authority to compensate. If the idle control range is already exhausted, the extra load stalls it.

Airflow restriction, first
The most common cause on any engine with mileage.
Carbon in the throttle body
Deposits build around the throttle plate and in the bore. Even with the plate at its learned position, the effective opening is smaller than the ECU expects.
Cleaning works — but the adaptation must be relearned afterwards. Cleaning without a relearn moves the physical zero while leaving the stored zero unchanged, and the idle can end up worse than before.

The idle air control valve, on older engines
Engines with a separate IAC valve suffer the same carbon problem in the valve itself: P0505 idle air control diagnostics.
A blocked air filter or intake
Rare as a cause of low idle specifically, but check it: air filter and engine breathing.
Mechanical load, second
Something is absorbing torque the engine expected to have.
- Air conditioning compressor dragging, or engaging when it should not.
- Alternator under heavy load from a weak battery. A battery being charged hard at idle takes real power: alternator charging diagnostics.
- Power steering pump at full lock, which every engine feels.
- A seizing accessory pulley or belt tensioner: serpentine belt wear signs.
- Automatic transmission dragging in gear, which is why the stall happens when you stop.
Test method: compare idle in neutral against idle in drive, and idle with the air conditioning off against on. The RPM difference tells you how much load each is taking.
Engine condition, third
If air and load check out, the engine itself is not making the torque it should:
- Low compression on one or more cylinders.
- Misfire below the threshold to set its own code — check misfire counters per cylinder: engine misfire troubleshooting.
- Incorrect valve timing from a stretched chain.
- Fuel delivery falling short at low demand.
What to log
Watch these together at idle:

The most informative single value is the idle air command. If the ECU is already asking for everything it has and the RPM is still low, the restriction is downstream of the control.
The vacuum leak paradox
Vacuum leaks usually cause high idle, not low. But a large leak downstream of the throttle can confuse the control loop enough to produce either — the ECU closes the throttle to compensate, then cannot open it enough when load arrives.
Check fuel trims: strongly positive at idle and near zero at 2500 rpm is the vacuum leak signature: P0171 and P0174 lean mixture.
After the repair
Relearn the idle adaptation, then verify:
- Idle steady at the specified RPM, warm, in neutral.
- RPM drop when engaging drive within a reasonable range.
- No stall with the air conditioning on and the steering at lock.
- Fuel trims near zero.
