P2176: throttle actuator idle position not learned after cleaning
The code that appears after a job that should have gone well. Cleaning the throttle body moved the physical zero and nobody told the ECU.
Almost every P2176 has the same story behind it: someone cleaned or replaced the throttle body, the car came back with a high or hunting idle, and the code appeared.
Nothing failed. A required step was missed.

What “learned idle position” means
An electronic throttle does not have a fixed closed position. The ECU learns where “closed” is by driving the plate against its stop and recording the sensor voltage there.
That value is stored and used as the reference for every idle calculation afterwards.
Now consider what carbon does. Deposits build around the plate over years, so “closed” gradually moves. The ECU re-learns slowly and keeps up.
Then you clean it. In one afternoon the plate can close much further than it could the day before, and the stored reference is now badly wrong — by more than the slow adaptation can absorb.
The ECU sees a throttle position it cannot reconcile and sets P2176.
The symptoms
- Idle much higher than normal, often 1200–1800 rpm.
- Hunting idle that will not settle.
- A stall when coming to a stop: P0506 idle speed lower than expected.
- Poor throttle response off idle.
- Limp mode on some vehicles.
Frustratingly, the car often ran better before the cleaning. That is what makes this code memorable.
Doing the relearn
The procedure varies, and finding out which applies to your vehicle before starting saves the whole problem.
Common approaches:

Automatic relearn. Ignition on for a set time without cranking, then idle for several minutes without touching the pedal or switching on loads. Some vehicles do it entirely on their own over a few drive cycles.

Key-cycle sequence. A specific pattern of ignition on and off, sometimes with the pedal held.

Scan tool command. A dedicated function that commands the ECU to relearn. The most reliable where available.

Battery disconnect. Works on some vehicles by clearing all adaptations — and loses every other learned value at the same time, so it is a blunt instrument.
Do not force the plate by hand on an electronic throttle body. The motor and reduction gearing are not designed to be back-driven, and damage is a real possibility.
When it is not the relearn
If the relearn was performed correctly and the code persists:
- The cleaning was incomplete. Deposits remaining on the plate’s seating edge still prevent full closure.
- The plate is damaged or bent slightly from being forced.
- The return spring is weak, so the plate does not reach its stop.
- The sensor tracks are worn: P2135 and P2138 correlation.
- A vacuum leak downstream is holding idle high independently of the throttle: P2279 intake air system leak.
That last one is worth checking properly, because it produces the same symptom and is unrelated to the throttle work.
Verifying the fix
After the relearn:

Compare the rest position value before and after cleaning. If it did not change, the cleaning did not reach the plate’s seat.

- Clean or replace the throttle body.
- Relearn the adaptation.
