P2119: throttle actuator control throttle body range/performance

P2119 is specifically about the throttle body’s mechanical behaviour rather than its electrical circuit. The ECU performs a self-test — usually at key-off or key-on — driving the throttle to its limits and checking that it moves and returns as expected.

When it does not, this code sets.

The self-test you can hear

On many vehicles, the throttle sweeps audibly for a second when you switch the ignition off, or just before cranking. That whirr is the ECU checking the mechanism.

If you have stopped hearing it, or it sounds laboured, that observation belongs in the diagnosis.

Carbon, and where it collects

The deposits are not distributed evenly. They build where airflow is slowest and where crankcase vapour condenses:

• Around the edge of the plate, where it seats when closed.
• In the bore at the plate’s closed position.
• On the underside of the plate.

The consequence is that the closed position moves. The plate cannot close as far as it used to, or it binds slightly as it approaches.

The ECU learned the correct closed position when the throttle body was clean. As carbon builds, reality drifts away from that stored value until the difference exceeds tolerance.

Direct injection engines suffer more because there is no fuel washing the intake: GDI carbon buildup.

Cleaning it, properly

Two steps, and the second is not optional.

Step one: clean it. Remove the throttle body where practical, use a cleaner intended for throttle bodies, and take particular care around the plate edge and its seat.

Do not force the plate open by hand on an electronic throttle body — the motor and gearing are not designed for it and can be damaged.

Step two: relearn the adaptation.

This is where most DIY attempts fail. After cleaning, the physical closed position has moved back toward where it was when new, while the ECU still holds the value it learned from the dirty throttle.

The result: idle too high, hunting, or the same code within a few kilometres.

The relearn procedure varies. Some vehicles do it automatically after a period of idling; others require a specific key-on sequence; others need a scan tool command. Find out which yours needs before starting, not afterwards.

Other causes

The motor or gearing

Worn brushes, or a stripped tooth in the reduction gearing. Usually replaced as an assembly.

The return spring

Weak or broken, so the plate does not return reliably. A safety-relevant finding.

The position sensors

Worn tracks producing a reading that does not match reality: P0121 to P0123 throttle position sensor.

Something in the bore

Debris from a failed air filter or intake component, jamming the plate.

Symptoms

• Idle too high or hunting: fluctuating idle RPM causes.
• A stall when coming to a stop: P0506 idle speed lower than expected.
• Hesitation on light throttle.
• Limp mode with reduced power.
• The car settling to a fast idle and staying there.

Log throttle position with the engine off and ignition on, then through a slow pedal sweep.

The prevention conversation

Carbon in the throttle body comes largely from crankcase ventilation vapour, and that is part of the design. What influences the rate:

• Oil condition and interval, since worn oil produces more vapour: oil change interval reality.
• A functioning crankcase ventilation system: air filter and engine breathing.
• Journey length, because short trips never burn off deposits: short trips and engine damage.

In what order

1. Log throttle rest position and compare with expectation.
2. Sweep the pedal slowly and watch for binding.
3. Inspect the plate and bore for carbon.
4. Clean carefully without forcing the plate.
5. Relearn the adaptation — mandatory.
6. Verify idle is stable and the code stays clear.
