Skoda Scala and Yeti: two eras of the same engineering
The Yeti belongs to an earlier VAG generation and the Scala to the current one. Same group hardware, different specific concerns.
The Yeti ran from 2009 to 2017 and the Scala arrived in 2019. They never overlapped, and they represent two different generations of VAG engineering.

Yeti: the earlier generation
Well regarded, practical, and with the fault list of its era.
Early TSI timing chain
The 1.2 and 1.4 TSI engines of that period have a documented tensioner concern.
A rattle on cold start is the warning, and it matters because these are interference engines: P0016 crankshaft-camshaft correlation and timing chain vs belt DTC codes.
TDI intake and EGR
Carbon in the intake tract and the swirl flaps, which is the recurring VAG diesel item: P2015 intake swirl flaps and P2004 to P2010 intake manifold runner control.
DSG on equipped cars
Wet-clutch versions need a genuine fluid and filter service. Skipping it is the leading cause of mechatronic complaints: P0700 transmission control system malfunction.
Haldex on four-wheel-drive versions
A short oil and filter interval that owners routinely miss: differential and transfer case care.
Water ingress
Blocked scuttle and sunroof drains, putting water onto modules under the carpets: damp carpet and electrical faults and sunroof drain blockage.
Scala: the current generation
Newer platform, newer engines, and a different set of considerations.
The 1.0 TSI three-cylinder
The volume engine. Direct injected and turbocharged, so intake valve carbon accumulates as on any DI engine: GDI carbon buildup.
Coolant deserves closer attention than on a larger engine — there is less of it, so a small loss matters more, and the electric pump can fail with no external leak: P0128 thermostat deep dive and water pump failure signs.
More electronics
Newer VAG models carry substantially more driver assistance and comfort electronics.
Consequences: greater sensitivity to battery condition, and calibration requirements after windscreen or bumper work.
ADAS calibration, battery replacement and registration and P0560 to P0563 system voltage faults.
The infotainment and networking
More modules means more that can go quiet on a weak supply. A scan full of communication codes on a modern VAG car is usually one power problem: U0073 control module bus off and when the scanner lies about ghost codes.
What is common to both
The group parts advantage. Anything documented for a VW, SEAT or Audi with the same engine applies.
Boost leaks rather than turbo failures. Underboost on either generation is usually a split hose or a loose clamp: turbocharger boost leak diagnostics.
What generic OBD-II reaches: codes, live data, freeze frame and readiness. Coding and comfort modules need enhanced access: scan tool limits.
Buying used
On a Yeti:
- Cold-start it yourself and listen for chain rattle on a TSI.
- Check DSG fluid history where fitted.
- Check Haldex service history on four-wheel-drive versions.
- Check the carpets for damp.
On a Scala:
- Check the coolant level and its history.
- Ask about ADAS calibration if there has been front-end work.
- Check battery age and registration.
Both:
- Check readiness and permanent codes for a recent clear: OBD readiness monitors explained and Mode 0A permanent DTCs.
Used car pre-purchase OBD check.
Pair an ELM327 adapter, open the free tier of the app and record a cold start with coolant temperature and misfire counters. Across both generations, the cold start is where the information is.
