Audi A6 and A8: OBD diagnostics on the big platforms
Large Audis carry more modules than most cars have components. That changes what a scan means: the full code set across modules matters more than any single code.
The A6 and A8 sit at the complex end of the VAG range. Both carry a large module count, both use air suspension in many specifications, and both depreciate steeply enough that maintenance budgets often lag behind the car’s needs.

Read every module, not just the engine
This is the single most important habit on these cars.
With this many modules, one root cause produces codes in several places at once. Reading only the engine gives you a fragment, and clearing before recording the full set destroys the pattern that would have explained everything.
The characteristic tell: several unrelated systems complaining together. That is power, ground or network — not several simultaneous failures.
U0100 lost communication with ECM, U0121 ABS, U0140 and U0155 and when the scanner lies about ghost codes.
Load-test the battery first. On a car that keeps this many modules partially awake, a marginal battery is the most common single cause of a multi-code complaint. Replacement usually needs registering to the vehicle: battery replacement and registration.
Then check for parasitic drain, since a module that will not sleep is what killed the battery: parasitic battery drain diagnostics.
Petrol engines
TFSI carbon on the intake valves. Direct injection, no port fuel wash. Deposits accumulate and produce rough idle and misfires that survive new coils and plugs. GDI carbon buildup and P0301 to P0304.
Timing chain tensioners on earlier engines. Cold-start rattle is the warning: P0016 and timing chain vs belt DTC codes.
Oil consumption on some earlier TFSI examples: engine oil consumption, normal or not.
Variable valve timing solenoids clogged by sludge from extended oil intervals: VVT P0011 and P0014.
TDI diesels
The full emissions stack, with the usual short-trip vulnerability:
- EGR carbon — P0404.
- Intake swirl flaps — a recurring VAG-specific fault: P2015 swirl flap diagnostics.
- DPF — DPF light on and P2002 and P2463.
- AdBlue and SCR — AdBlue warning countdown and AdBlue system diagnostics.
- Injector correction values flag a failing injector before it becomes a misfire: EDC17 correction values.
Power that vanishes uphill and returns on the flat is usually fuel supply or boost rather than the turbo itself: car loses power uphill and P0087.
Air suspension
Fitted to most A8s and many A6 Allroad models, and the biggest single financial risk on these cars.
The failure sequence is predictable: air springs perish and leak, the compressor runs more to compensate, and eventually the compressor burns out. Catching the leak first is dramatically cheaper than replacing both.
The warning sign: the car sits low after standing overnight and rises when started.
Air suspension is a chassis system outside generic OBD-II — scan tool limits and suspension modification electronics.
Transmission
The ZF 8-speed and the S tronic dual-clutch both appear across these ranges. Both need fluid service on a real interval, and “sealed for life” is where most transmission bills originate.
P0700 is a pointer only — read the TCM. Then P0730, P0740 and P0741 and ATF diagnostics.
Quattro hardware
Transfer case and differential oils are routinely never changed. Whine differing between acceleration and overrun is gear mesh: differential and transfer case care and whining noise when accelerating.
What generic OBD-II reaches
Codes, live data, freeze frame and readiness read normally. Everything characteristically Audi — air suspension, driver assistance, comfort modules, coding — needs enhanced access: manufacturer coding for VAG, BMW and Mercedes.

Buying used
The gap between purchase price and running cost is wider here than almost anywhere else.
- Read every module, and record before clearing.
- Load-test the battery.
- Leave it overnight and check ride height in the morning on air-sprung cars.
- Cold start it and listen for chain rattle.
- Check soot load on any diesel.
