ADAS: when Lane Keep and Adaptive Cruise stop working, and why OBD calibration isn't "out of the box"
Lane Keep Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, AEB via OBD-II: typical codes U0428, C1B01, why calibration is needed after windshield replacement, and why an OBD adapter won't do it.
ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) — Lane Keep Assist (LKA), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) — rely on radars, cameras, ultrasonic sensors. Each requires calibration after service — precise direction and offset setup. Below: how OBD-II sees ADAS and why calibration isn’t done by a simple adapter.
What ADAS is
- Front bumper radar (77 GHz, ACC + AEB) — Bosch MRR, Continental ARS
- Camera behind windshield (Mobileye, Bosch, Aptiv) — lane markings, signs, pedestrians recognition
- Bumper ultrasonics (parking sensors) — up to 12
- Rear corner radars (Blind Spot, Rear Cross Traffic)
- 360° cameras (Surround View) — 4 fisheye
- Lidar (Volvo XC90 2020+, Mercedes S-Class) — new
All wired to dedicated ADAS ECU (separate module, often integrated into camera module).

When calibration is needed
- Windshield replacement — camera bolted to glass, shifted → static + dynamic calibration needed
- Bumper repair — radar shifted 0.5-2° → ACC imprecise
- Wheel alignment — steering angle sensor needs re-calibration
- DTC C1B01/C1B02 — no CEL, but ADAS is disabled with a cluster warning
What OBD-II sees
Via Mode 22 UDS:
- Camera calibration status:
not calibrated / in progress / done - Radar horizontal angle: typically ±0.3° (spec)
- Radar vertical angle: typically ±1°
- Camera height above ground (mm)
- Camera pitch/yaw/roll
- Distance to target (real-time, in ACC mode)
Static vs Dynamic calibration
Static
- Shop, car on perfectly level surface
- Special target board (large black-white cross-hatch matrix) at 3-5 m in front
- Special radar target rig (Bosch DAS 3000, Autel MA600)
- Duration: 30-90 min
- Shop price: $150-400
Dynamic
- Highway drive 30-40 min
- Ideal conditions: clear lane markings, dry weather, +40°F..+85°F, speed 40-60 mph
- ECU auto-calibrates during drive
- Duration: 30-90 min of driving
- Price: $50-100 (just shop time + verification)
Most cars need both — static for “coarse setup”, dynamic for “fine tune”.
Why not with plain ELM327
- SecurityAccess challenge — calibration runs via UDS
RoutineControl $31 + SecurityAccess $27. Stock ELM327 doesn’t support seed-key challenge - Special equipment — target board (for static) or traffic-scene simulator (Bosch DAS 3000)
- Software license — VW ODIS, BMW ISTA, Mercedes Xentry — only at authorized shops
Dangerous consequences of skipping calibration
- Lane Keep off by 2° → car holds trajectory 6-8 in off-line → at 60 mph wheels touch the shoulder
- ACC radar off by 1° → 300 ft ahead the point “looks” 5.5 ft off → misses a car or brakes at “empty space”
- AEB won’t fire if camera sees wrong → collision
So: don’t drive with C1B01/C1B02 even if you don’t “use” ADAS — LKA can actively steer the wrong direction.
What Car Diagnostics does
