Coolant: why colours must not be mixed and what to do if they were
Coolant colour guarantees nothing — the additive package is what matters. The types, the consequences of mixing, and how it shows up in diagnostics.
Coolant colour is a dye the manufacturer added for convenience. It is not a standard and guarantees nothing. The additive package is what matters, which is why “green topped up with green” is not a compatibility check.
What coolant does
It does not freeze — the obvious function.
It does not boil at normal system temperatures.
It protects against corrosion — the main and least obvious function. The additives form a protective layer on aluminium, iron, copper, and plastic.
It lubricates the pump — the water pump seal runs on this fluid.
It is the third function that depletes with time. Coolant does not “go off” in terms of freezing; it loses its corrosion protection.
The types
The base is almost always the same: glycol. The difference is in the additives.
Silicate — forms a protective layer quickly but depletes faster. Historically “green”.
Carboxylate — works locally at corrosion sites and lasts longer. Historically “red”.
Hybrid and lobrid — combinations.
The main rule: go by the vehicle manufacturer’s specification, not by the colour in the bottle.
What happens when they are mixed
Not an explosion or an instant failure — something worse and less visible.
The additives neutralise each other. Protection disappears and corrosion continues.
Sediment forms. It blocks the fine passages of the heater matrix and the thermostat. The symptom: poor cabin heat despite adequate fluid.
Rubber components and seals may react differently.
What to do if they were mixed: flush the system and fill with one fluid to specification. Cheaper than a pump and a radiator.
About water
Distilled water is the only acceptable choice for diluting concentrate.
Tap water brings salts and scale. A direct route to blocked passages and corrosion.
Adding water at the roadside during overheating is acceptable as an emergency measure to get home. But afterwards the system needs putting right, not running like that for a year.
When to change it
Per the manufacturer’s schedule — again a calendar, not only mileage.
Signs it is due earlier:
- The fluid has darkened or gone cloudy.
- Sediment or flakes in the tank.
- A rusty tint.
- Somebody topped it up with something unknown.
What diagnostics shows
Coolant temperature — the key parameter. Warming too slowly indicates the thermostat, running too hot indicates the system; covered in the overheating article.
Temperature sensor codes — P0128, P0117, P0118; covered in the temperature sensor article.
Fan status — whether it engages at the right temperature.
Inlet and outlet temperature difference, where those parameters exist.
In short
- Colour is a dye, not a standard; go by the manufacturer’s specification.
- Coolant’s main job is corrosion protection, and that is what depletes.
- Mixing produces sediment that blocks the heater matrix and thermostat.
- Only distilled water for dilution.
- Darkening and flakes in the tank mean change it early.
