Battery flat overnight: how to find a parasitic drain
The car stands a day or two and will not start. How a parasitic drain differs from a worn battery, what quiescent current is normal, and the order in which to hunt the culprit.
The car stands for a day and will not start. Stand it three days and it certainly will not. That is a classic parasitic drain, and the standard mistake is buying a new battery that will be in the same state a month later.
First eliminate three other causes
The symptom is identical, the causes are not, and they check quickly.
The battery is worn out. After three to five years it holds charge worse, and in cold weather that becomes obvious suddenly. Test under load, not by measuring voltage.
The alternator is not charging. Then the battery never recovers on a drive and the deficit accumulates. Covered in the alternator article.
Corroded terminals. The cheapest cause and not the rarest.
If those three are out, hunt the drain.
What quiescent current is normal
A modern car never switches off completely: control modules go to sleep in stages.
- Normal once asleep — roughly 20 to 50 mA.
- Up to 80 mA happens on cars with a lot of electronics, an alarm, or telematics.
- Over 100 mA is a drain that eats the battery within a few days.
The key words are once asleep. Immediately after the doors close, consumption is in the hundreds of milliamps, and that is normal. Modules need 10 to 40 minutes, depending on model, to enter sleep. Measuring “straight away” gives an inflated figure and sends the search nowhere.
The search procedure
The method is simple and needs nothing beyond a multimeter.
- Switch off and close the doors, while keeping access to the cabin fuse box (latch the door switch manually or work with the bonnet closed — it depends on the model).
- Put the multimeter in series with the negative terminal in current mode.
- Wait 30 to 40 minutes without opening a door. Every opening wakes the modules and restarts the clock.
- Record the quiescent current. Within normal means the problem is elsewhere.
- Pull fuses one at a time, watching the current. A sharp drop identifies the circuit.
- Break the circuit down against the layout — what is fed from it.
The usual culprits
Aftermarket equipment. Alarms, dash cams on permanent live, GPS trackers, amplifiers, USB adapters in the accessory socket. This is cause number one; covered in the aftermarket equipment article.
A module that will not sleep. Head unit, comfort module, door module. Often because of a faulty switch — the car “believes” a door is open.
A sticking relay leaving a circuit live.
Moisture in a connector. Water creates conductivity between pins; typical after washing or rain.
A boot switch — the courtesy lamp burning inside a closed boot where nobody sees it.
What diagnostics adds
A multimeter proves the drain exists. A scanner suggests where it comes from.
Codes in body electronics modules — door switches, locks, modules. Those are most often exactly what keeps the system awake.
Voltage during cranking. Sagging below what a healthy battery holds means the battery is already weak regardless of any drain.
Voltage with the engine running. Normal is roughly 13.8–14.6 V. Lower points at the alternator, higher at the regulator.
A cascade of codes across systems after a night parked usually means a voltage sag, not a fault in every module individually; mechanics in the ghost codes article.
What not to do
Do not replace the battery first. With a drain present, the new one dies the same way.
Do not disconnect the terminal overnight as a “fix”. That is masking, and it resets module adaptations every time.
Do not measure in the first few minutes — you will get a large figure that is normal for that moment and conclude the drain is catastrophic.
In short
- Normal quiescent current is roughly 20–50 mA, but only after the modules sleep.
- Wait 30–40 minutes without opening a door or the measurement is meaningless.
- Search fuse by fuse with the meter in series with the negative.
- Aftermarket equipment is cause number one.
- A new battery with the drain still present dies the same way.
