Limits differ between engines and no single figure exists. Guides that work in practice:

Piston rings. Smoke under load, high crankcase pressure, low compression. That is a rebuild.

The turbocharger. Grey smoke under acceleration, oil in the intercooler and pipework. A frequent cause of “sudden” consumption on a turbo engine.

Crankcase ventilation. A blocked or faulty valve pushes oil into the intake. The cheapest cause on the list, which is why it is checked first.

What diagnostics shows

There is no direct “oil consumption” parameter, but there are indirect ones.

Misfire counters — an oil-fouled plug well produces misfires in a specific cylinder; mechanics in the misfire article.

Fuel trims — burning oil changes mixture composition and produces a steady offset.

Code P0420 — oil poisons the catalyst and its efficiency falls. So oil consumption often “surfaces” as exactly this code.

An oil level sensor — where fitted, live data shows a trend rather than a single dipstick reading.

What to do

  1. Measure consumption properly: top up to the mark, record mileage and how much went in over a period. Without numbers the conversation is meaningless.
  2. Inspect the engine from below to rule out a leak.
  3. Watch the smoke on a cold start and on blipping the throttle.
  4. Check crankcase ventilation — cheap and often decisive.
  5. Check the oil viscosity and approval: oil too thin for that engine is consumed faster; covered in the viscosity article.
  6. Never run below minimum — that destroys the engine regardless of the cause.
