Fuel Trim (STFT and LTFT): how the fuel correction tells you about engine health
What Short-Term (STFT) and Long-Term (LTFT) Fuel Trim mean, which values are normal, and how to diagnose a vacuum leak, dirty MAF or clogged injector from Fuel Trim numbers alone.
Fuel Trim is one of the most powerful OBD-II parameters for engine diagnostics. An experienced mechanic can look at two numbers — STFT and LTFT — and in 30 seconds tell you whether the engine has a vacuum leak, a tired MAF, an aging O2 sensor or a clogged injector. This post covers how to read Fuel Trim correctly and how to avoid the common interpretation pitfalls.
What Fuel Trim is
The ECU targets a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio of 14.7:1 (for gasoline). To know whether reality matches the target, it reads the upstream O2 sensor: voltage varies with the residual oxygen in the exhaust.
If the mix is rich (too much fuel) — ECU shortens the injector pulse. If lean — ECU lengthens it. This correction, expressed as a percentage of the base injector time, is Fuel Trim.
- STFT (Short-Term Fuel Trim) — the “fast” correction, reacts on every O2 sensor cycle (several Hz). Shows what’s happening right now.
- LTFT (Long-Term Fuel Trim) — the “slow” correction, accumulated ECU memory over many hours. Shows what the system has “learned” as a permanent offset — and now compensates in the base map itself.
Positive value (+%) = ECU is adding fuel → the engine “thinks” the mix is lean. Negative (-%) = ECU is cutting fuel → the engine “thinks” the mix is rich.
What values are normal

Read the values on a warmed-up engine at idle and during a steady 40–50 mph cruise in 3rd–4th gear. Fuel Trim during cold-start, warm-up or hard acceleration is not diagnostic: the ECU is in open-loop and ignores the O2 sensor.
Classic fault patterns
1. Vacuum leak after the MAF (unmetered air)
- LTFT: +15% or more at idle
- LTFT at 2500-3000 RPM: ~ 0-5%
Logic: at idle the airflow is small → a leak causes a large relative offset; at higher RPM the leak dissolves into the total flow. Look for cracks in the intake boot, worn throttle-shaft seal, split PCV hose.
2. Weak MAF sensor (under-reads flow)
- LTFT: +10-20% across all regimes
- STFT: +0 to +5% (nearly zero — the ECU compensates entirely via LTFT)
Logic: the MAF under-reports airflow, ECU under-fuels, O2 sees lean, ECU pushes LTFT up uniformly. Try a MAF cleaner spray (not carb cleaner — that strips the platinum wire).
3. Clogged injector (single cylinder)
- LTFT: +5-10% evenly
- Misfire on that cylinder (P030X)
- Rough idle
Logic: one injector under-delivers → lean in that cylinder → misfire; the ECU tries to compensate by adding fuel to all cylinders, but the specific cylinder still misfires.
4. Clogged catalyst or exhaust leak upstream of the O2 sensor
- LTFT: -10% or more
- May co-occur with P0420 (see P0420 deep dive)
Logic: the leak pulls outside air into the O2 sensor → sensor sees too much oxygen → reports lean → ECU cuts fuel → the engine actually runs rich.
5. Tired upstream O2 sensor
- STFT: wide oscillations ±15%
- LTFT: near zero, but STFT is drifting
Logic: the sensor reacts slowly (typical “age” failure), the ECU can’t keep up with the actual state → correction goes chaotic. Often precedes P0133 / P0135.
How to read Fuel Trim in the app
In Car Diagnostics the SHRTFT1 (STFT bank 1) and LNGFT1 (LTFT bank 1) PIDs live on the Live Monitor screen — pick the PID from the list and drop it on the chart. For V-engines (V6, V8) add SHRTFT2 / LNGFT2 (bank 2) as well — a mismatch between banks is itself a diagnostic signal (e.g. a vacuum leak on one cylinder head).
For a deeper analysis — ask the AI agent to interpret the combination of LTFT + active DTCs + freeze frame: it takes into account the make and model, the typical failures of that specific engine, and returns a ranked list of likely causes.
When Fuel Trim is not a problem
Don’t rush to the parts store if:
- You’ve just replaced the air filter — LTFT may drift for a few days as the system relearns
- You switched fuel grade (say 87 → 91 octane) — different fuel density
- You’re above 5,000 ft (1500 m) altitude — thinner air naturally shifts correction
- The engine is cold (< 175°F / 80°C coolant) — only read Fuel Trim after warm-up
And remember — Fuel Trim isn’t a standalone verdict: interpret it together with other parameters (MAP, MAF, RPM, O2 voltages). A single number never tells the whole story, but for an experienced diagnostician Fuel Trim is the first place to look.
