Revs hang between shifts: emissions calibration, not a fault

Why it is deliberate

Two reasons, both emissions-related.

Rapid deceleration disturbs the mixture and pushes the catalyst outside its efficient window at exactly the moment the exhaust is still hot.

Adapting to it

If the behaviour is normal for your car, technique is the answer.

  • Pause slightly longer between gears and let the revs come down.
  • Release the clutch more progressively to absorb the difference.
  • Anticipate — with practice, the shift becomes smooth again.

Dual mass flywheels contribute too, holding rotational inertia deliberately to damp pulsation. That inertia keeps the revs up a moment longer.

Some causes produce genuine rev hang or make normal hang much worse.

A dirty throttle body
