Selection problems: linkage first

If the engine is off and some gears will not select, the clutch is irrelevant.

Selector cables or rods stretch, and their bushes perish. The lever moves further than it used to, the gate feels vague, and eventually one gear becomes unreachable. Bushes are inexpensive and this is a common, cheap fix on higher-mileage cars.

Manual gearbox oil is a genuinely neglected service item. Old, degraded or wrong-specification oil makes synchros work poorly, and it is dramatically worse when cold — a gearbox that is notchy for the first two miles on a winter morning and fine afterwards is very often just tired oil.

Correct specification matters as much as level.

Cold weather

Be straight about this: a manual gearbox has almost no sensors. There is no clutch wear PID, no synchro condition reading, no linkage position. Generic OBD-II will not diagnose this.

What data does contribute:

  • Engine RPM against vehicle speed. Revs rising without matching speed proves clutch slip numerically rather than by feel.
  • Ruling out the engine. A car that will not pull away can be a clutch or a limp-mode engine problem — limp mode explained.
  • Battery voltage, on cars with electronic clutch position sensors or hill-hold that misbehave on low supply.
