P2101 and P2110: throttle actuator control motor range and forced limited RPM
P2110 is not a fault in itself — it is the ECU announcing it has capped your engine speed. The fault that caused it is somewhere else in the list.
Drive-by-wire throttle systems are safety-critical, so their fault response is decisive: cap engine speed to something that keeps the car controllable and let the driver reach a workshop.
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| P2100 | Throttle actuator control motor circuit / open |
| P2101 | Motor circuit range/performance |
| P2102 | Motor circuit low |
| P2103 | Motor circuit high |
| P2110 | Forced limited RPM |

Read P2110 as a consequence, not a cause
This is the point people miss.
P2110 means the ECU has limited engine speed. It is the announcement of a decision, and the reason for that decision is another code in the list.
So when you see P2110, look past it:
- P2101 — the motor is not moving the throttle as commanded.
- P0121 to P0123 — throttle position sensor circuit: P0121 to P0123.
- P2135 — the two throttle sensor tracks disagree: P2135 and P2138 correlation.
- P2122 and P2123 — pedal sensor faults: P2122 and P2123.
Fix the underlying code and P2110 disappears. Clearing P2110 on its own achieves nothing.
What P2101 means physically
The ECU commanded a throttle angle, the position sensor reported a different one, and the discrepancy exceeded tolerance.
Causes:
Carbon around the throttle plate
The most common by a wide margin. Deposits build in the bore and around the plate. The motor cannot achieve the commanded position, or the plate binds on the way.
Direct injection engines suffer more: GDI carbon buildup.
Adaptation not relearned after cleaning
The trap that catches people out. After cleaning or replacing a throttle body, the ECU still holds the old learned closed position. The physical reference moved and the stored one did not.
The result is often worse than before cleaning: high idle, hunting, or the same code returning immediately.
The relearn is mandatory: P2176 throttle idle position not learned.
The motor itself
Brushes wear, and the motor stalls under load. Frequently the throttle body is replaced as an assembly.
The return spring
A weak or broken return spring means the plate does not return to its rest position reliably. Safety-critical, and a strong reason not to defer this repair.
The connector and wiring
Six wires in a connector on a vibrating, heat-cycled component.
Symptoms
- Sudden loss of power with the engine limited to idle or a low ceiling.
- The car will not exceed a certain speed regardless of pedal input.
- Hesitation and a flat spot on light throttle.
- Unstable idle: fluctuating idle RPM causes.
- Intermittent recovery after a restart, then a return of the fault.
Limp mode: what it is and how to exit and car loses power uphill.
The test that identifies it
Log pedal position and throttle position together, then sweep the pedal slowly from closed to fully open and back.
| Observation | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Both sweep smoothly and track each other | Healthy |
| Throttle lags then catches up | Binding — carbon |
| Throttle sticks at a value and jumps | Motor or worn track |
| Throttle held at a low fixed value | Already in limp mode |
| Pedal itself is erratic | Pedal sensor, not the throttle |
Sweep slowly. A fast sweep passes over the sticking point too quickly to see.
Safety and the return spring
Worth being direct about. This system controls how much power the engine makes, and its failure mode is designed to be a power cut rather than a power increase.
That design works because the ECU can always close the throttle and cut fuel. But a throttle body with a damaged return spring or a seized plate is not a “drive it until convenient” fault.
Sequence
- Read all codes. P2110 alone is not the diagnosis.
- Log pedal against throttle through a slow sweep.
- Inspect the throttle plate for carbon.
- Clean it if dirty, then relearn the adaptation. Both, or neither.
- Check the connector before condemning the body.
- Verify afterwards that throttle tracks pedal smoothly through the full range.
Pair an ELM327 adapter, open the free tier of the app and record pedal position against throttle position through a slow full sweep. Binding shows up on that graph in a way it never does through the pedal.
