Rattling underneath: heat shield, mounting, or silencer
A metallic rattle at particular revs usually costs almost nothing to fix. How to tell a heat shield from a blown silencer, and why not to run it on.
A metallic rattle that appears at particular revs and vanishes at others is an exhaust classic. The good news: the most common cause costs almost nothing. The bad news: the neighbouring causes are expensive and sound similar.
Heat shields
The most common cause. The thin metal shield between exhaust and body rusts at its fixings, works loose, and starts vibrating.
The sign: rattling within a narrow rev band — appearing around 1800 rpm and gone by 2200. Resonance lives at a specific frequency.
Another sign: the sound changes if you tap the underside by hand at that spot with the engine off.
The repair is a clamp or a hose clip; the cheapest repair on the car. Do not simply remove the shield: it protects the body and fuel lines from heat.
Mounting rubbers
The sign: a boom and a thump when pulling away and over bumps, with the exhaust visibly sagging.
What running it on costs: the system swings, and a crack appears where the pipe is rigidly fixed — at the manifold or the flexible section. That is expensive.
A blown silencer or pipe
The sign: the note becomes louder and deeper, there is a puffing under throttle, and in winter you see vapour in an unusual place.
Where it corrodes: wherever condensate collects — the rear box and the low points of the pipe. That is why short trips destroy exhausts; the regime is covered in the short trips article.
A cracked manifold or flexible joint
The sign: a sharp metallic noise on a cold start that fades as the engine warms — the metal expands and the crack partly closes.
This is the most important variant, because it affects more than noise.
Why the exhaust matters to the electronics
Here lies a non-obvious link.
A crack upstream of the oxygen sensor draws in extra air. The sensor sees oxygen and reports a lean mixture. The module adds fuel although the mixture is actually fine.
The consequences: higher fuel consumption, positive fuel trims, lean codes P0171 and P0174, and in time P0420 from the catalyst working incorrectly.
The practical conclusion: lean codes plus a metallic noise when cold are one problem, not two; trim mechanics are in the fuel trim article.
The checking order
- Identify the rev band where the noise occurs.
- With the engine cold and off, tap the shields and pipe by hand.
- Rock the exhaust — movement means the mountings.
- Listen to a cold start — a sharp noise that fades indicates a crack.
- Read the codes — lean codes confirm an air leak.
- Watch the trims — a steady positive value at idle.
