Nissan Note and Micra: small Nissans, CVT questions included
Later Micras share Renault engineering and earlier ones do not. Both eras raise the same question about the automatic gearbox.
The Note and Micra span a long period and, in the Micra’s case, a change of engineering base — later cars share their platform and engines with Renault.
Shared reference: Nissan common DTC codes, Nissan Almera common OBD issues and Nissan Qashqai and Juke.
Establish which generation
Earlier Micras — Nissan engines and Nissan electronics.
Later Micras (from 2017) — Renault-Nissan alliance platform, with Renault engines including the 0.9 and 1.0 petrol and the 1.5 dCi diesel.
That determines which fault list applies, and it is worth establishing before researching anything: Renault 1.5 dCi engine diagnostics and Renault common DTC codes.
The CVT
Where fitted, and it is the question that dominates any used automatic purchase.
Correct fluid, changed on a real interval. Nissan CVT fluid is not interchangeable with conventional ATF, and the interval is genuine rather than “lifetime”.
Early symptoms are subtle:
- Shudder at light throttle.
- A delay before engagement.
- Revs rising without matching acceleration.
- A whine that rises with speed.
Log engine RPM against vehicle speed. Revs climbing while speed does not is belt slip, measured rather than argued about.
Gears slipping on an automatic, automatic transmission ATF diagnostics and transmission overheating warning.
Heat is the enemy. A CVT in heavy traffic on a hot day, or towing, runs hot — and heat degrades the fluid that the whole system depends on.
On a used purchase, ask for the CVT fluid history. Most sellers cannot produce it, and that is itself information.
The petrol engines
Port injected on many variants, which means no intake valve carbon problem: GDI carbon buildup describes what you are avoiding.
Later turbocharged direct-injection variants do accumulate deposits, and underboost is usually a split hose rather than a failed turbocharger: turbocharger boost leak diagnostics.
Catalyst codes at higher mileage — rule out an exhaust leak and an ageing upstream sensor first: P0420 catalyst code explained.
The diesel
Where fitted, the 1.5 dCi with its documented items: injectors, turbo oil supply, EGR carbon and the after-treatment stack.
Renault 1.5 dCi engine diagnostics, DPF light on and injector correction values on EDC17.
A small diesel in a city car doing short journeys is the wrong pairing: short trips and engine damage.
The e-Power versions
Later Notes in some markets use e-Power — a series hybrid where the engine only generates electricity and never drives the wheels.
Diagnostic consequence: the engine runs at fixed operating points rather than following the driver, so readiness monitors behave differently and the driving experience is electric.
The 12 V battery still matters most: EV 12V battery failures and plug-in hybrid diagnostics.
Electrical and corrosion
A weak battery produces communication codes across modules: P0560 to P0563 system voltage faults.
Corrosion on older examples in salted-road climates deserves an underbody inspection: underbody rust inspection.
Buying used
- Establish the generation and therefore the engineering base.
- CVT fluid history, if it is an automatic. The most important question.
- Log RPM against speed on the test drive.
- Check soot load on a diesel.
- Inspect the underbody on older examples.
- Readiness and permanent codes for a recent clear: Mode 0A permanent DTCs.
Used car pre-purchase OBD check and first car buying checklist.
Pair an ELM327 adapter, open the free tier of the app and log engine RPM against vehicle speed under acceleration. On a CVT car, that is the measurement that decides whether to walk away.
