HR16 / MR20 Engines: Timing Chain Issues

P0016 / P0017 — CKP/CMP Synchronization Error

The HR16DE (1.6L, Micra K12/K13, Note) and MR20DE (2.0L, Qashqai J10) have a known timing chain tensioner wear issue.

Symptoms:

• Metallic rattle on cold start (first 5–10 seconds)
• P0016/P0017 after 80,000–100,000 km

Live Data:

• Cam Timing Deviation at idle: should be < 3°

• 5° constantly → chain stretched or tensioner failed

Note: Nissan issued a service bulletin (TSB) for HR16 chain tensioner replacement for certain production years. Check with dealer by VIN.

P0011 — Intake Cam Timing Over-Advanced

On MR20 with VEL (variable valve timing):

• Clogged OCV (Oil Control Valve) — classic issue after poor oil change intervals

Jatco CVT: The Most Common Nissan Problem

• P0776 — Pressure Control Solenoid B: stuck off

CVT Live Data:

• CVT Fluid Temp at normal driving: < 120°C; > 130°C = dangerous for belt
• Primary Pulley Speed vs Secondary Pulley Speed: ratio should equal CVT Target Ratio
• CVT Belt Slip (if supported): should be 0%

Prevention: Jatco CVT fluid (NS-2, NS-3) must be changed every 40,000–60,000 km. Nissan officially says “lifetime fluid” — ignore this. Overheating + old fluid = belt/pulley wear.

Early warning signs (no codes yet):

• Hesitation on pull-away from standstill
• RPM flare at low speed
• CVT hunting between “gears” at highway speed

• HV Battery Voltage at 50% SOC (24 kWh Leaf): ~368V; (40 kWh): ~380V
• Pack Temperature — all modules should be ± 3°C of each other
• Cell Voltage Delta — difference between highest and lowest cell: < 0.1V (healthy) > 0.3V = degraded

Leaf Battery Degradation Bars: The Leaf dashboard shows battery capacity bars (1–12). Loss of bars = P0A80 territory. Via OBD-II you can see exact Battery State of Health (SOH) % — a far more useful metric.
