Variable displacement AC compressor: why "new refrigerant" doesn't help, and how OBD sees a sick pump
Fixed vs variable displacement AC compressor, how to diagnose the control valve, code B1247, symptoms, and why "clutch not engaging" isn't always an electric fault.
Classic AC compressor (fixed displacement) either spins at 100% or is off via electric clutch — “all-or-nothing”. Modern (2005+) most are variable displacement compressor (VDC) — spins constantly, pressure regulated by control valve. And it’s more often the valve that fails, not the compressor itself. Below: how to diagnose.
Fixed vs Variable displacement
Fixed (classic, pre-~2005)
- Pump volume constant
- Controlled via electric clutch — on/off by ECU command
- Symptom when failed: clutch doesn’t click, compressor doesn’t spin
- Simpler, cheaper ($200-400)
Variable (modern, 2005+ on most cars)
- Constantly spins off engine belt (no clutch or always-on clutch)
- Pump volume regulated by control valve (solenoid or proportional) — 0 to 100%
- Pressure control smooth, no jerks on engage
- More expensive ($400-1200), complex
- Brands: Denso 5SE, 6SEU, Sanden PXE, Halla

Classic patterns
VDC control valve dead (stuck at “0%”)
- Symptom: AC turns on, compressor spins, but doesn’t cool
- OBD: Low side pressure 60-80 psi (norm 29-58), High side 60-80 psi (norm 145+) — refrigerant not flowing
- Cause: valve doesn’t open → pump volume = 0
- Fix: valve replacement ($60-150) — not whole compressor. Or whole compressor ($400-1200) if valve is press-fit.
VDC control valve stuck at “100%”
- Symptom: AC always full displacement → overcools, cycles off on evap freeze (< 32°F)
- OBD: Evap temp 25°F (norm 37-46°F)
- Fix: valve replacement
Valve shorting (shuts off in 3-5 sec)
- Symptom: AC works a minute then cuts abruptly → restart in 30 sec
- OBD: empty DTC but Mode 22 shows clutch cycles > 20/min
- Cause: short in valve → ECU protection triggers
- Fix: valve replacement or new pump
”Clicking” clutch without cooling
- Symptom: clutch clack every 30 sec, blows warm
- OBD: low side 20-25 psi (low), high side 100 psi (low)
- Cause: not enough refrigerant (leak), ECU cycles clutch to avoid overheat
- Fix: find leak + recharge (see AC post)
Via Mode 22 — deep-level
Manufacturer PIDs:
- Compressor duty cycle (%) — actual pump displacement (critical for VDC)
- Compressor RPM — actual rotation
- Control valve current (mA) — norm 200-600 mA depending on load
- AC clutch state (fixed): engaged/disengaged
- Discharge line temperature (°C) — norm 60-90°C when driving
VDC prevention
- Don’t turn AC off in winter — VDC compressor spins constantly (from belt), but oil circulates only when valve moves refrigerant. Winter — once a month AC ON for 10 min — mandatory.
- Don’t “top up from a can” without vacuuming — condensate clogs the valve
- Belt tensioner change on schedule — loose belt lets AC load slip, pulley spins unevenly, kills the valve
