HVAC deep-dive: climate control via OBD, blend-door actuators, servo motors — when the cabin heats "from one side"
Dual-zone climate control via OBD: codes B12xx, blend-door actuator state, mode-door, vent output temperature. How to diagnose "warm on the right — cold on the left".
Climate control on a modern car — up to 20+ servo motors driving flaps (blend, mode, defrost, recirculation), plus temperature sensors, AC compressor, fans. Much of it is diagnosable via OBD-II. Below: deep-dive into HVAC module via ELM327.
What HVAC includes
- HVAC ECU — dedicated module (often integrated into climate panel)
- Blend-door actuator (left/right on dual-zone) — regulates cold/warm mix
- Mode-door actuator — where flow goes (face / feet / defrost / mix)
- Defrost door actuator — separate for windshield
- Recirculation door — fresh air from outside or cabin recycle
- Heater core valve (not on every car) — regulates coolant through heat exchanger
- Blower motor (cabin fan)
- Aux water pump (auxiliary pump for quick warm-up)
- AC compressor clutch (see AC post)
- Cabin filter (not electronic)
- Temperature sensors: evap temp, incar temp, ambient temp, sun load (solar panel on dash)

Classic patterns
”Warm on the right — cold on the left” (dual-zone auto)
- OBD: B1422 (blend-door RH stuck)
- Cause: plastic blend-door servo worn (typical Ford Focus, Chevy Malibu at 60k+ mi)
- Fix: actuator replacement ($30-100 part + $50-200 labour, access via dash)
“AC blows cold but fan is weak”
- OBD: B10D0 (blower motor circuit) or no code
- Cause: blower resistor / final stage died — popular on every modern car
- Symptom: works only on speed 4 (resistor bypass), or doesn’t blow at all
- Fix: resistor replacement ($30-80) or blower itself ($100-250)
“Warm-up very slow, heat comes only after 20 min”
- OBD: B12F0 (aux water pump) or B12B0 (defrost door)
- Cause: auxiliary coolant pump for fast cabin warm-up not working (BMW N54, VW EA113 — popular)
- Fix: aux pump replacement ($80-200)
“AC won’t disable recirculation”
- OBD: B10AC (recirculation door stuck)
- Cause: door doesn’t switch, drawing from cabin → CO2 accumulates (driver drowsiness)
- Fix: clean/replace servo ($50-150)
What OBD-II can show
Via Mode 22 UDS (HVAC-specific PIDs):
- Blend-door position (%) — actual vs requested
- Mode-door position — face/feet/defrost/mix code
- Blower motor duty cycle (%)
- Evap temperature (°C) — for freeze protection
- Ambient temperature (°C) — from external sensor
- Incar temperature (°C) — cabin sensor
- Sun load (W/m²) — dash solar sensor
- Heater core temp (°C) — for warm-up calculation
Example diagnostics: “cabin won’t warm in winter”
- ECT — is engine really warmed to 90°C? If not, first P0128 thermostat
- Heater core temp via HVAC Mode 22 — if 45°C at ECT 90°C → aux pump or clogged core
- Blend-door position — 100% (max heat)? If 40% at request 100% → servo
- Blower motor duty — 100%? If all positions 0% → resistor
Prevention
- Cabin filter change annually ($10-30, 15 min)
- Every 2-3 years — run AC 5 min in cold season (so oil doesn’t settle)
- Every 3-5 years — AC recharge + servo check
- Every 5 years — clean heater core from dust and coolant residue
