Haval and Great Wall: OBD diagnostics on Chinese SUVs
These read fine on generic OBD-II, and that matters more than usual: independent workshop familiarity is thin, so owner-side data does more work here than on established brands.

Generic OBD-II works properly
Worth stating plainly, because people assume otherwise. These vehicles are built for export markets with emissions compliance in mind, use CAN, and respond to generic requests normally.
Codes, live data, freeze frame and readiness all read with any competent Bluetooth Classic adapter. What lies beyond the powertrain — ABS, airbags, body modules — needs manufacturer-level access, exactly as on any other brand: scan tool limits.

Check the supported PID list first
This is a genuinely useful first step on any less-familiar brand.
The ECU advertises which parameters it supports. Reading that list tells you exactly what this vehicle will and will not report, which prevents a lot of fruitless searching for a value that was never there.

Turbocharged petrol engines
The volume engines are turbocharged direct-injection fours, and their fault profile matches that architecture rather than anything nation-specific.
Boost. Underboost codes are usually a split hose or a loose clamp rather than a failed turbocharger: turbocharger boost leak diagnostics, P0299 and P0234 and car loses power uphill.
Direct injection carbon. Intake valve deposits accumulate as on any DI engine — misfires that survive new coils and plugs point here: GDI carbon buildup and P0301 to P0304.
Mixture codes from perished intake and vacuum hoses. Compare fuel trims at idle against 2500 rpm: P0171 and P0174.
Catalyst codes at higher mileage — rule out an exhaust leak and an ageing upstream sensor first: P0420 and P0133.
Cooling. Watch the actual coolant temperature curve rather than the dashboard gauge: P0128 and temperature gauge fluctuating.
Dual-clutch transmissions
Many models use a dual-clutch gearbox. The general rules apply: fluid service on a real interval, and some low-speed hesitation is normal behaviour for the design rather than a fault.
Shudder, slip and warning messages are not normal. Log RPM against vehicle speed to distinguish them.
P0700 is a pointer only; read the transmission module. Then P0730, transmission shudder at low speed and gears slipping on an automatic.
Four-wheel drive versions
Add a coupling and rear differential with oil that rarely gets changed anywhere, and less so on brands where the service network is still developing.
Differential and transfer case care and whining noise when accelerating.
Electrical
Well-equipped specifications mean many modules, and the usual consequence: a weak battery produces communication codes across systems that look unrelated.
Test under load before diagnosing anything: alternator charging diagnostics, U0100 and when the scanner lies about ghost codes.
The practical ownership question
Two things matter more than on an established brand.
Parts availability and lead times. Worth checking for your market before buying, not after something breaks.

Build a baseline early
On a brand with less accumulated collective knowledge, your own history is worth more. Record fuel trims, coolant behaviour and charging voltage in the first month, then compare quarterly.
Drift over time is what reveals problems, and it only works if you took the first reading.
