Handbrake warning stays lit: switch, fluid level or EPB
The same lamp reports three different things depending on the car, and one of them is a brake fluid level you should check before driving.
The red brake warning lamp is shared. Depending on the vehicle it can mean the handbrake is applied, the brake fluid is low, or the brake system has a fault — and those are very different situations.

Check the fluid level first
Before assuming a switch fault, look at the reservoir. Low brake fluid illuminates this lamp on most vehicles, and low brake fluid has two possible meanings:
Worn pads. As friction material wears, pistons extend and fluid moves from the reservoir into the calipers. A gradually falling level with thin pads is normal wear.
A leak. Fluid escaping past a seal or out of a corroded line. That is urgent.
The test: check the pads. If they are near the end of their life, the level explains itself. If they are healthy and the level is low, you have a leak.

The handbrake switch
If the fluid is fine, the switch is the usual cause.
On a lever handbrake: a simple switch at the lever base, activated by a small plunger. It corrodes, or the lever does not release fully.
Try lifting the lever slightly and releasing it fully again. If the lamp goes out, the switch was marginal.
On an electronic parking brake: the switch is a module input, and the fault is usually in the module or the actuators rather than a mechanical contact.
Electronic parking brakes
Different diagnosis, and worth understanding before working on the rear brakes.
An EPB uses motors on the rear calipers, or a cable actuator, controlled by a module. A warning can mean:
- A motor or its wiring has failed.
- The system is out of calibration after brake work.
- Low system voltage. EPB motors draw substantial current, and a weak battery produces faults: P0560 to P0563 system voltage faults.
- A caliper seized, so the motor cannot achieve its position.
Critically: rear pads on an EPB vehicle cannot be changed without putting the system into service mode. Winding the piston back by hand damages the motor or its gearbox.
That service mode usually needs a scan tool with the right capability — one of the functions increasingly behind authenticated access: security gateway modules and OBD access and scan tool limits.
Establish that before starting the job, not with the caliper in your hand.
The lamp that comes on while driving
A different and more serious case.
If the red brake lamp illuminates while driving and the handbrake is off, treat it as a hydraulic warning:
- Note whether the pedal feels different.
- Stop safely and check the fluid level.
- If the level is low, do not continue.
Combined with an ABS lamp, it can also mean a pressure or sensor fault: ABS and traction light on together.
The handbrake that does not hold
A related complaint with a different cause: handbrake not holding.
On a cable system, usually stretch or seized cables. On an EPB, usually a seized caliper or a motor problem.
Both are inspection failures, and both matter on a hill.
Winter
Cables and caliper mechanisms freeze, particularly after washing the car and parking in freezing conditions.
In hard frost, leave a manual car in gear and rely on that rather than the handbrake, if the surface is level enough to do so safely.

Where to start
- Check the brake fluid level.
- Check pad thickness if the level is low.
- Operate the handbrake fully and release it again.
- Check for other lamps — ABS alongside changes the picture.
- On an EPB, check system voltage and read the module.
- Do not start rear brake work on an EPB without service mode access.
The practical next step: pair an ELM327 adapter, open the free tier of the app and check system voltage if an electronic parking brake is misbehaving. Marginal supply causes more EPB faults than failed motors do.
