Brake pedal sinks to the floor: stop driving and read this
A pedal that keeps travelling under steady pressure means the hydraulic system is not holding. This is the one fault on the site that justifies a recovery truck.
Most of what appears on this site can wait until the weekend. This cannot.
A brake pedal that sinks under steady foot pressure, or that reaches the floor before the car slows properly, means the hydraulic system is losing its ability to hold pressure. The failure mode is complete brake loss.
Do not drive it. Have it recovered.

Two different symptoms
A spongy pedal feels soft but holds at a position. That is usually air in the system or a flexing hose — serious, but the pedal has a floor.
A sinking pedal keeps travelling while you hold steady pressure. That means fluid is escaping past a seal or out of the system, and the position gets worse the longer you hold.
The sinking version is the emergency.
What causes it
A failing master cylinder
The most common cause of a sinking pedal with no external leak.
Internal seals allow fluid past rather than out. Nothing appears on the ground, the reservoir may look nearly full, and the pedal sinks.
The classic test: hold firm steady pressure at a standstill for thirty seconds. A healthy pedal stays where it is. One that creeps toward the floor has an internal leak.
An external fluid leak
Check the reservoir level and look for damp areas:
- At each wheel, behind the brake dust shield.
- Along the rigid brake lines under the vehicle, which corrode.
- At the flexible hoses.
- On the bulkhead behind the master cylinder.
- In the footwell — fluid running down the pedal box means the master cylinder seal has failed.
Brake fluid strips paint and is slippery. A wet patch under the car near a wheel is a definite finding.
Corroded brake lines
The rigid pipes rust from the outside, particularly in salted-road climates. They fail suddenly, and when one does you lose one circuit entirely.
Modern systems are split diagonally so you retain some braking, but with a long pedal and much less capability.

Air in the system
After any brake work, or after fluid has boiled from heavy use on a long descent.
Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time, and moisture lowers its boiling point. Old fluid boils under hard use, and vapour is compressible.

This is why brake fluid has a service interval — typically every two years — and why it is not optional.
A failed caliper seal
Fluid escaping past a piston seal, often visible as dampness around the caliper and contamination on the pads.
If it happens while driving
- Pump the pedal rapidly. This can build enough pressure for partial braking.
- Change down through the gears to use engine braking.
- Apply the handbrake progressively, not suddenly — a locked rear axle at speed causes a spin.
- Steer to somewhere safe. Use kerbs and an uphill gradient if you have them.
- Once stopped, do not continue.

The check that catches it early
Thirty seconds, once a month, and it is the one preventive test worth the habit.
Engine running, stationary, handbrake on. Press the brake pedal firmly and hold for thirty seconds.

Also check the reservoir level monthly. A falling level with no visible leak means fluid is going past a seal, or the pads are wearing — and one of those is urgent.

What diagnostics contributes
Very little, honestly, and it is worth being clear about that.
Brake hydraulics is mechanical. A scan tool can read ABS codes on vehicles that expose them, but a pedal that sinks is diagnosed with a torch and a jack.

In what order
- Stop driving.
- Check the fluid level.
- Do the thirty-second hold test.
- Look for leaks at each wheel, along the lines, and in the footwell.
- Have it recovered rather than driven.
