Preparing a car for winter: what to check over OBD and what by hand
Winter does not break cars — it exposes what was already broken. A weak battery, slow warm-up, and a small vacuum leak are invisible in summer and become a morning call-out in the cold.
Winter rarely breaks a healthy car. It does something else: it brings whatever was marginal to the surface. A battery that still started the engine in summer will not turn it in the cold. A thermostat holding 165 °F instead of 195 °F leaves you with no heater.
So winter preparation is not a set of rituals but a check on four parameters that summer forgives.
Through diagnostics: four parameters
1. Voltage — the main one
Battery capacity falls 20–40 % in the cold, while the current needed to crank rises: thick oil, harder turning.
What to read:

Below 12.2 V overnight means the battery is already partly discharged, and the first frost will be its last. Codes P0562 and P0563; the charging system is covered in battery and alternator diagnostics.

2. Thermostat and warm-up rate
In summer a thermostat sticking open shows up only in fuel consumption. In winter it means a cold heater and an iced windscreen.
The check: start the engine cold and watch temperature in live data. Normal is a steady climb to 185–205 °F in 5–10 minutes. Stuck at 160 °F is P0128, and the thermostat should be replaced before the frost, not after.
3. Fuel trims
A vacuum leak gives +10 % in summer and goes unnoticed. In winter a cold start already needs an enriched mixture, and the car simply will not start or will stall.
Watch long-term trim at warm idle: above +15 % means find the leak before the cold arrives. The procedure is in the lean mixture guide.
4. Pending codes
Read Mode 07 — faults recorded once and not yet confirmed. That is what becomes a problem in a month. Mechanics in code types.
By hand: what OBD cannot see
- Coolant. Test its freezing point with a hydrometer, not “by colour”. Coolant diluted with water over the summer freezes at 5 °F and splits radiators.
- Tyres. Switching to winter compound below 45 °F is not about snow — it is that summer rubber hardens in the cold and stops gripping.
- Brake fluid. Hygroscopic: once it has absorbed water it boils under hard braking on a descent. Change every 2–3 years.
- Wipers and washer fluid. Fluid with the right freezing point, not summer water.
- Door seals. Treat with silicone or they freeze shut.
- Locks and barrels. Blow out and lubricate.
- Spark plugs. Worn plugs work in summer and give up first on a cold start — see coils and plugs.
Extra checks for diesels
- Fuel filter. Condensation collects there and freezes first. Replace before winter regardless of mileage.
- Glow plugs. In summer the engine starts without them; in winter it does not. Codes P0670–P0674, covered in their own article.
- Winter fuel. From November, use busy stations so you do not get summer diesel that waxes at 23 °F.
One evening’s sequence
- Read all codes, pending included.
- Measure voltage in three states.
- Start the engine cold and watch warm-up.
- Read fuel trims once warm.
- Test coolant with a hydrometer.
- Inspect spark or glow plugs.
- Replace the fuel filter on a diesel.
Total: one evening and the price of a filter. Against a call-out in freezing weather, that is a good trade.
In short
- Winter exposes rather than breaks; check what summer forgives.
- Voltage is parameter one; below 12.2 V overnight means replacement.
- Check the thermostat in live data, not on the gauge.
- Trim above +15 % in summer is a no-start in winter.
