Dashboard warning lights: what stops the journey and what waits for the workshop
The colour is the priority. Which lights mean stop now, which allow you to drive on carefully, and why a lamp that never illuminates is the worst of all.
A modern instrument cluster can display dozens of symbols, and most drivers sort them into two buckets: “amber will wait” and “red is scary”. That approximation is close to the truth but not enough in exactly the situations where you have to decide quickly.
The colour rule
Manufacturers follow a shared logic, and it is simple.
Red means stop. A safety risk, or a component destroying itself right now. A red lamp means “pull over somewhere safe now”, not “get home first”.
Amber means attention. A system has logged a fault, the car still drives, but the operating mode may be restricted. Planned work, not an emergency.
Green and blue are information. Something is switched on: side lights, main beam, cruise.
Red: stop immediately
Oil pressure. The most expensive lamp on the cluster. An engine without oil pressure destroys itself in tens of seconds, not minutes. Stop the engine at once; then a recovery truck. Not “make it to the petrol station”.
Coolant temperature. Overheating warps the head and blows the gasket; covered in the overheating article.
Brake system. It can mean the handbrake is up, or a critical drop in fluid level. Check the handbrake; if it is down, do not drive.
Battery charge. The alternator is not charging. The car will run as long as the battery lasts and then stop without brake assistance; covered in the alternator article.
Airbags. The car drives, but in an impact the airbag will not fire. That is not “it will wait”, that is no protection.
Amber: drive on, but investigate
Check Engine, steady. A fault is stored, engine operation is permitted. Read the code and plan the repair.
Check Engine, flashing — the exception to the amber category. Those are active misfires destroying the catalyst right now. Reduce load and speed, and get to a workshop at the first opportunity; mechanics in the misfire article.
ABS. The brakes work, but without anti-lock. Stopping distances grow, and on a slippery surface substantially.
Stability control. It may be permanently lit (a fault) or flashing (the system is intervening right now).

Tyre pressure. Check physically with a gauge, not by eye.
The lamp that never illuminates
The most dangerous cluster state is not a red lamp but a missing one.
At ignition on, every indicator should illuminate for a few seconds and go out. That is the self-test. If a lamp never illuminates at all:
- It has failed — and you will not see the real problem.
- It was disabled deliberately — a standard trick during pre-sale preparation.

Why a lamp is not a diagnosis
One Check Engine lamp covers hundreds of different codes — from a split evaporative hose to a dead catalyst. On its own it reports only a fact: “the control module logged a deviation”.
The code narrows it to a system. Live data narrows it to a component. So the sequence is always the same: lamp → code → freeze frame → live parameters, each step eliminating options.
What to do with any lamp
- Identify the colour. Red means pull over and stop.
- Check the simple things: oil level, temperature, handbrake, tyre pressures.
- Read the code before drawing any conclusion.
- Look at the freeze frame — under what conditions it set; mechanics in the freeze frame article.
- Do not clear the code before the repair — you lose the context.
In short
- Red means stop now, not “get home”.
- Oil pressure and temperature are the two lamps where delay is measured in engines.
- A flashing Check Engine is no longer in the amber category.
- A lamp that never illuminates at ignition is worse than one that stays on.
- A lamp is a fact, not a diagnosis; the diagnosis starts with the code.
