P0894: transmission component slipping — measured, not guessed
The module compared what the gearbox should be doing with what it is doing, and named the difference. This is the code that precedes the expensive conversation.
Slipping is the failure mode that ends automatic gearboxes. A clutch that does not hold generates heat instead of torque, heat destroys the friction material, and the process accelerates.
P0894 is the module saying it has detected exactly that.

What was measured
Input shaft speed divided by output shaft speed gives the actual ratio. The module knows the expected ratio for the commanded gear. Persistent disagreement, beyond a tolerance and for longer than a shift takes, is slip.
This is a measurement, not an inference. Which is why it deserves to be taken seriously rather than cleared.
Before accepting it: the two cheap explanations
Fluid level
Low fluid means the pump draws air and pressure collapses under load. The clutches then genuinely slip — the code is true, but the cause is a top-up plus finding the leak.
On dipstick-less gearboxes the level is checked at a specified fluid temperature: P0710 to P0713 transmission fluid temperature sensor.
Gearboxes are sealed. A low level means fluid left through a seal, a cooler line, or the cooler in the radiator. Find it, or you will do this again.
Fluid condition
Friction modifiers in ATF wear out. Degraded fluid cannot hold clutches at the same pressure, and the first symptom is slip under load when hot.
Burnt fluid — dark and smelling scorched — is evidence that slipping has already been happening for a while.

Then: the pressure explanations
A clutch slips if it is not being applied hard enough, and that is not always the clutch’s fault.
- Pressure control solenoid unable to deliver commanded pressure: P0745 to P0747.
- Valve body wear, leaking pressure internally.
- A blocked filter starving the pump.
- Pump wear, particularly noticeable at idle.
P0868 transmission fluid pressure low.
All of these are cheaper than a rebuild, and all of them produce P0894.
Finally: genuine wear
If fluid is correct, pressure follows command, and slip persists and worsens when hot, then the clutch material is worn.
That is a legitimate conclusion — reached in that order, not offered first.
The data that supports the conversation
Log engine RPM against vehicle speed through a firm acceleration in a high gear, once cold and once fully warm.

The cold-versus-warm comparison is the single most useful piece of evidence you can bring to a workshop. It distinguishes fluid and pressure problems from worn material better than any description.

What driving with it costs
Every kilometre driven with a slipping clutch generates heat and removes material. A gearbox that could have been saved by a fluid service and a solenoid at the point the code appeared may need a rebuild a few thousand kilometres later.

Sequence
- Check fluid level and condition at the correct temperature.
- Log RPM against speed, cold and warm.
- Read the transmission module for adaptations and the full code set.
- Test pressure control before assuming clutch wear.
- Drop the pan and look at what is in it.
- Then discuss the rebuild, with evidence rather than assumption.
