Reverse will not engage: manual gearboxes and what goes wrong
On most manuals reverse has no synchroniser — which is exactly why it crunches. The causes and what to fix.
On a manual gearbox, reverse is the one gear that on most cars has no synchroniser. That is a design decision rather than a defect, and most of the symptoms follow from it.
Why it crunches
A synchroniser matches shaft speeds before the teeth engage. Reverse has none — so the gears have to stop by themselves.
The consequence: select reverse immediately after stopping and the input shaft is still turning on momentum, so the teeth clash with the characteristic crunch.
The correct technique:
- Come to a complete stop.
- Depress the clutch.
- Wait one or two seconds — the shaft stops.
- Select reverse.
Another trick: engage first gear briefly, then reverse. First has a synchroniser and stops the shaft.
When it is actually a fault
It will not engage at all, or engages intermittently even with a pause.
It crunches even at a complete stop with a proper pause.
It jumps out under load.
It engages only with force and a jolt.
The causes
The clutch is not fully disengaging. The most common cause, and it explains why the symptom appeared alongside stiff engagement of other gears. The cause is usually hydraulic; covered in the clutch pedal article.
The shift linkage — rods, cables, and the gate. Worn bushes give imprecise gear selection.
Gearbox oil — old or the wrong viscosity thickens in cold, and the symptom appears only in the morning.
The reverse lockout mechanism — many cars have a collar or button, and its mechanism seizes.
Worn gear teeth — that means dismantling the gearbox.
The reverse light switch — it does not affect engagement, but when it fails the lights and camera stop working; two different things that get confused.
The checking order
- Check the technique — a pause after stopping. Half the cases end here.
- Try via first gear — if that works, it is shaft rotation.
- Assess the other gears — are they stiff too? Then it is the clutch.
- Check gearbox oil level and condition.
- Inspect the shift linkage for play.
- Check the clutch fluid level — the reservoir is often shared with the brakes.

- Reverse usually has no synchroniser — a crunch when hurried is normal.
- A one or two second pause after stopping settles half the cases.
- Selecting first briefly stops the shaft and saves the teeth.
- If other gears are stiff too, it is the clutch rather than the gearbox.
- The reverse switch affects lights and camera, not engagement.
