The clutch pedal went to the floor: hydraulics, not the clutch
A pedal that suddenly drops almost always means hydraulics rather than the disc. The cylinders, the fluid, and what to do on the road.
A clutch pedal that suddenly goes soft or drops to the floor suggests the worst scenario — a clutch replacement. In fact the suddenness points at hydraulics, and that is the cheaper part.
Telling it apart from wear
Clutch wear develops over months: the bite point creeps up and slip appears; covered in the clutch wear article.
Hydraulics fail abruptly: fine yesterday, on the floor today.
So: an abrupt change in pedal feel means hydraulics; a gradual one means wear.
Three causes
A fluid leak. Clutch hydraulics often share a reservoir with the brake system — so a falling level can mean the clutch rather than the brakes.
Leak locations: the master cylinder (traces in the footwell under the pedal), the slave cylinder (traces on the gearbox), and the hose between them.
Air in the system. The pedal goes soft, the bite point blurs, and gears engage stiffly. Air enters through a leak or after running on a low level.
Worn seals in a cylinder — fluid bypasses internally, nothing leaks outside, and there is no pressure. The characteristic sign: the pedal slowly sinks under steady pressure.
What to do on the road
A dropped pedal does not mean the car is finished.
Try pumping it: several rapid presses can temporarily build pressure if there is air in the system. Sometimes that is enough to get home.
Starting without the clutch — in first gear on the starter with the engine off, then turn the key. An emergency technique worth knowing and worth using only when there is no alternative.
Changing gear without the clutch while moving — possible by matching revs, but it takes skill and wears the synchronisers.

About the fluid
It is the same brake fluid, and it is equally hygroscopic: it absorbs water and loses its properties.
The consequence: old fluid in the clutch circuit produces the same problems as in the brakes — vapour forms with heat, and the pedal goes soft after hard work in traffic.

What diagnostics shows

Faulty sensor symptoms that get confused with hydraulics:
- Cruise control does not work.
- Stop-start does not work.
- The engine will not start with the pedal down.
Engine codes for that sensor circuit — they are what separates mechanics from electrics.
In short
- An abrupt pedal change is hydraulics; a gradual one is disc wear.
- The reservoir is often shared with the brakes: a falling level can mean the clutch.
- A pedal sinking under steady pressure means worn cylinder seals.
- Clutch circuit fluid is changed along with the brake fluid.
- “It will not start with the pedal down” is the sensor, not the hydraulics.
