A car after long storage: what to check before you turn the key
A car that sat for months breaks not from ageing but from stillness: the battery dies, discs rust, fuel degrades, calipers seize. The order for bringing it back.
Cars do not only break from being driven. A few months of stillness produce their own set of problems, and they share one feature: almost none of them involve the engine.
Before you turn the key
1. Check for rodents
Not a joke and not rare. Mice nest in air filters, in the intake plenum, behind trim — and chew wiring. Some manufacturers’ harness insulation is plant-based, and they find it appetising.
What to look at: traces under the bonnet, in the cabin under the mats, inside the air filter. A chewed harness produces the nastiest electrical faults, the kind people hunt for weeks.
2. Fluid levels and puddles underneath
Oil, coolant, brake fluid. While you are there, look at the parking spot — over months even a slow leak becomes visible.
3. Tyres
Standing in one place produces flat spots in the contact patch. They show up as vibration at speed, which sometimes clears after a few dozen miles and sometimes does not.
Pressure falls over months — check before the first drive, not after.
4. Brake discs
Rust builds over a few months and pads can stick. The first stops will grind — that is normal, the surface layer clears. If it has not gone after a dozen applications, it is no longer a surface layer; see brake noise diagnosis.
The battery is the main casualty
Self-discharge plus parasitic draw do their work: three months of standing leaves a battery in a state it does not always come back from.
The procedure:
- Measure voltage before starting. Below 11.8 V means charge it with a charger, not a jump start.
- Do not jump-start a deeply discharged battery. The alternator then works at its limit and can be damaged.
- After charging, check running voltage: 13.8–14.4 V.
If the battery died faster than it should have, hunt a parasitic drain — see its own guide.
Fuel
Petrol loses its properties in 3–6 months; diesel goes off faster because of condensation and microbial growth.
- Half a tank of old fuel should be diluted with fresh to full.
- Diesel: drain the water trap on the fuel filter where the design allows.
- Old fuel symptoms — hard starting, detonation, misfires. What shows in the data is in the bad fuel guide.
The first start: what to watch
Connect the adapter before turning the key.
- Crank for 2–3 seconds without starting to raise oil pressure, where the car permits that.
- Start and watch oil pressure immediately, if the parameter is available.
- Let it idle for 2–3 minutes before moving.
- Read codes. After long storage there are usually many, and most are a cascade from the voltage sag. Mechanics in ghost and false codes.
- Clear codes and drive a cycle. Whatever returns is real.
Step 5 matters especially here: without it you will chase a dozen faults that do not exist.
After 30 miles
A second check, once everything has warmed and bedded in:
- Pending codes — what was recorded on the first drive.
- Fuel trims — vacuum hoses can perish during storage.
- Readiness monitors — they are not ready after clearing, and an emissions test is impossible in that state; the procedure is in the drive cycle guide.
- Brakes — has the grinding cleared or not.
- Air conditioning — after long disuse a compressor can seize and seals can dry out.
If the storage exceeded a year
Additionally:
- Brake fluid — hygroscopic, and a year is enough to absorb water. Replace it.
- Timing belt — ages by calendar, not only by mileage.
- Hoses and seals — rubber hardens from stillness.
- Oil — replace regardless of mileage; it has oxidised.
In short
- Checking for rodents before the first start is not paranoia.
- Charge the battery with a charger rather than jump-starting it.
- A code cascade after long storage is voltage, not ten failures.
- Clear codes and drive a cycle: what returns is what is real.
- Over a year of storage means new oil and brake fluid regardless of mileage.
Download the app — voltage, codes, freeze frames, and monitors are read with an ELM327 adapter over Bluetooth SPP on Android.
