BMW N20 and N26: timing chain, oil filter housing and boost
A well-regarded engine with one documented failure that determines whether a used example is a bargain or a liability. The check takes thirty seconds.
The N20 replaced BMW’s naturally aspirated six-cylinder engines in the volume models, and it is a capable engine — turbocharged, direct injected, with variable valve lift.
It also has one documented issue that dominates every used-buying conversation.

The timing chain
Early N20 engines have a documented concern with the timing chain and its guides, particularly the lower chain and tensioner.
Why it matters: the N20 is an interference engine. A chain that jumps a tooth means valves meeting pistons, and that is an engine rather than a repair.
Later production revised the components, so the year matters. Establishing whether a specific engine has the updated parts — and whether the work has already been done — is the single most valuable thing to find out about a used example.
The check
Cold-start it yourself. Not after the seller has run it.
A rattle for one to two seconds before oil pressure fills the tensioner is the warning. It is not a characteristic to accept.
P0016 crankshaft-camshaft correlation, P0017 to P0019 on bank 2 and timing chain vs belt DTC codes.
Oil is the contributing factor
Chain and guide wear is accelerated by extended oil intervals and by oil that is not to specification.
An N20 with documented shorter-interval oil changes is a meaningfully better proposition than one on the manufacturer’s longest interval.

The oil filter housing gasket
The second documented item, and far less serious but very common.
The gasket between the oil filter housing and the block hardens and leaks. Depending on the layout, that oil lands on the alternator, the belt, or the exhaust.
Consequences: a burning oil smell, a contaminated belt, and on some layouts an alternator that fails from oil ingress.

Valve cover and crankcase ventilation
The valve cover on these engines integrates the crankcase ventilation system, and it warps or cracks.
Symptoms: oil leaks down the back of the engine, oil in the coil connectors causing misfires, and lean codes from unmetered air through a failed diaphragm.

Direct injection carbon
Standard for the architecture. Intake valve deposits build over tens of thousands of kilometres.
Symptoms: misfires that survive new coils and plugs, rough cold idle, gradual loss of response.
Boost
Underboost on these engines is usually a split charge pipe or a loose clamp rather than a failed turbocharger.

The wastegate actuator and its linkage are also known to develop rattle at idle.
Cooling
Electric water pump and plastic thermostat housing, both wear items.
The electric pump can fail without any external leak, so watch the coolant temperature curve: P0128 thermostat deep dive and water pump failure signs.
Buying used
- Cold-start it yourself and listen for chain rattle. Non-negotiable.
- Establish the production date and whether updated chain components are fitted.
- Ask for oil service records with dates, intervals and specification.
- Look for oil leaks at the filter housing and valve cover.
- Check the coolant temperature curve.
- Check misfire counters after a drive.
