Oil Leaking Under the Engine: 10 Leak Points and How to Pinpoint

An oil stain under the car in the morning is a typical symptom of an engine past 100k km. Rubber seals and gaskets wear over time. The question is not “is it leaking” but “from where exactly”. This article is a precise map of 10 typical oil leak points with DIY diagnosis.
Step 1: Assess colour and consistency
Different fluids look different:

1. Valve cover gasket (40% of cases)
Most common. The rubber ring seal between valve cover and cylinder head ages past 100–150k km.
Symptom: oil runs down the sides of the engine, leaving trails on side surfaces. Stain under the front of the engine.
Check: open the bonnet, visually inspect the valve cover. Wet edges = leak.

2. Front crankshaft seal (15%)

4. Oil pan gasket (10%)

After overheat or ageing. Symptom is more complex — not only oil but water in oil (white emulsion on the oil-cap).

On engines with VVT-i / VANOS. Solenoids have rubber seals that leak over the years.

7. Oil pump gasket (5%)
Gasket between block and oil pump housing. Leaks on diesels with high oil pressure.

Leaks are not read via DTCs directly. But low oil pressure appears as:
- DTC P0520 / P0521 — Oil pressure sensor circuit range
- Live monitor: PID “Oil Pressure” (not on all cars) — normal 2–4 bar at idle, 3–6 bar at 2500 rpm
If pressure below normal AND there is a leak — urgent!
