P0740 and P0741: torque converter clutch circuit and stuck-off faults
The converter clutch is what turns a slushbox into a direct drive at cruise. When it stops locking, fuel consumption rises, the gearbox runs hot and these two codes appear.
P0740 “Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Malfunction” and P0741 “Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off” describe the same component from two angles: the electrical circuit, and whether the clutch actually did anything.
What the converter clutch is for
A torque converter transmits drive through fluid. That is smooth and forgiving, and it always slips a little, which wastes energy as heat. At steady cruise that waste is pointless, so a clutch inside the converter locks the input to the output mechanically, eliminating slip entirely.
The benefits are real: several percent better fuel consumption at motorway speed, lower fluid temperature, and lower engine RPM for the same road speed. When the clutch stops locking, you lose all three.
Measuring slip directly
This is the diagnosis, and it needs only two live values.
Converter slip = engine RPM − turbine speed.
At a steady cruise in top gear with the clutch locked, slip should fall to almost nothing — typically under 50 rpm. If it sits at 200, 400 or more rpm, the clutch is not locking or not holding.

Where turbine speed is unavailable, watch for the small RPM drop of 200–600 rpm that normally happens at a steady cruise when lockup engages. No drop means no lockup.

P0740: the circuit
This code leans electrical.
- Solenoid failure. The TCC solenoid coil goes open or shorts. Common and relatively cheap.
- Wiring and connector. The transmission connector is hot, oily and prone to corrosion. Fluid wicking along the harness is a well-known failure.
- TCM driver failure. Rarer, and expensive.
A solenoid that fails electrically usually leaves the clutch off, so P0741 often accompanies it.
P0741: commanded but nothing happened
The ECU commanded lockup and measured no reduction in slip. The circuit may be fine.
- Fluid pressure too low. Worn pump, blocked filter or low fluid. Always start here.
- Valve body wear. The TCC control valve bore wears oval and pressure bleeds off. Very common on high-mileage automatics and often fixable with a rebuilt valve body rather than a full rebuild.
- Clutch lining worn. The friction surface inside the converter is gone. This requires replacing the converter.
- Solenoid stuck mechanically even though it tests fine electrically.
- Fluid condition. Degraded fluid loses the friction characteristics lockup depends on.
Shudder: the early warning
Before the code arrives, most cars shudder. It feels like driving over rumble strips, lasts a second or two, and happens at light throttle around 30–50 mph as lockup engages. Owners routinely mistake it for a misfire or an unbalanced wheel.
Catching it at the shudder stage matters. A fluid change with the correct specification fluid sometimes cures it outright, if the friction material is not yet gone. Detail: transmission shudder at low speed.
Once shudder has been ignored for a year, the lining is usually finished.
Fluid is the theme running through all of this
Every mechanical cause above traces back to fluid condition, level or specification. The single most common preventable cause of converter clutch failure is fluid left in far too long, or the wrong fluid fitted at a service.

- Fluid temperature rises, which accelerates degradation of everything else in the gearbox.
- Debris from the disintegrating lining circulates and blocks valve body passages.

- Valve body, rebuilt: $400–1200.
- Torque converter with fitting: $700–1800.
After the repair
Reset adaptations, then take a steady motorway run and confirm slip falls below 50 rpm when lockup engages, with no shudder during engagement. Check fluid temperature stays in range on a long run.
