Audi Q7 and Q5 OBD-II Diagnostics: 3.0 TDI V6, 3.0 TFSI, S-tronic, Air Suspension
DTC codes for Audi Q7 4L/4M and Q5 8R/FY: 3.0 TDI V6 CP4 P0087, 3.0 TFSI supercharger P0299, S-tronic DL501 P0715, Audi Air Suspension C1141 — OBD-II Live Data and diagnosis.
Audi Q7 and Q5 are large VAG group SUVs with characteristic VAG platform faults. Q7 4L/4M with 3.0 TDI and 3.0 TFSI, and Q5 8R/FY, are more complex to service than a Golf or A4 — particularly the air suspension and 7-speed S-tronic gearbox.
3.0 TDI V6 (Q7 4L/4M, Q5 8R): Primary Diesel
P0087 — Rail Pressure (3.0 TDI CP4.1/CP4.2)
3.0 TDI with CP4.1 or CP4.2 pump:
Q7 4L (pre-2015): CP4.1 — prone to failure on fuel with water or poor lubricity. Q7 4M and Q5 FY (post-2015): CP4.2 — more reliable, but still requires quality diesel.

P0299 — 3.0 TDI Biturbo Underboost
Q7 and some Q5 have twin-turbo systems:
- Small turbocharger (low-end boost) + large (high-end boost)
- P0299 from clogged VGT or small compressor failure

P0401 — EGR 3.0 TDI
EGR on V6 diesel is a more complex system with cooler:

3.0 TFSI V6 (Q7, Q5, A6, A7): Supercharged Petrol
P0299 — Supercharger: Insufficient Boost (3.0 TFSI)
3.0 TFSI — V6 with Eaton TVS mechanical supercharger:
- Supercharger is belt-driven from the crankshaft
- P0299 from worn Eaton or faulty bypass valve

Supercharger belt: Prone to wear after 80,000 km → P0299 from slippage.
P2187 — Lean Mixture 3.0 TFSI
3.0 TFSI — port + direct injection (D-4ST-type approach):
- GDI carbon on valves present but less severe
STFT B1/B2> +8% → PCV or carbon
S-tronic DL501 7-Speed (Q5 3.0 TDI, Q7 3.0 TFSI): Wet Clutch
DL501 (S-tronic 7-speed) — more complex than DQ200:
P0894 — General Clutch Slip
- DL501 wet clutch is more reliable than dry DQ200, but traffic jam overheating possible
Clutch K1/K2 Temperature> 180°C → cooling mode (reduced torque)
P0715 — Input Shaft Speed Sensor
Input Speed Sensor B1/B2: should show correct gear ratios- On failure → gearbox enters emergency mode (few gears only)
DL501 ATF servicing:
- ATF change every 60,000 km (Audi G 052 162 A2)
- Not “lifetime” despite Audi’s claim
Audi Air Suspension (Q7 4L/4M): Pneumatic System
C1141 — Air Suspension Compressor: Circuit Fault
Q7 4L with air suspension:
- C1141 = air compressor not responding → worn compressor or power circuit
- C1142 = system pressure below minimum
Air suspension Live Data:
Ride Height FL/FR/RL/RR: > 15 mm difference between sides → leak or sensorAir Reservoir Pressure: normal 10–14 bar; < 8 bar → compressor wornCompressor Runtime per Hour: > 20 min/hour → system leak
Most common Q7 4L leak locations:
- Air spring bellows (rubber cracks after 10 years)
- Valve block O-rings (distribution valves disconnecting)
- Plastic air line — breakage at push-fit connectors
C1149 — Ride Height Sensor: Calibration Required
After air spring or strut replacement — ride height sensor calibration needed:
Ride Height Sensor Actual vs Target: > 10 mm after repair → calibration required
Calibration via OBD:
- Service Functions → Air Suspension Calibration (Q7 4M: via ODIS or VAG Extended)
quattro AWD: Haldex or Torsen
Q5 (pre-2016): Haldex Gen 4 — Haldex Oil Pressure: > 5 bar while driving; < 2 bar → filter or pump
Q7 (all): Torsen — mechanical centre differential:
- P175F — Haldex valve (if equipped)
- Torsen rarely codes but requires transfer box oil monitoring

Q7 air suspension is the most expensive maintenance item: regular Compressor Runtime monitoring can prevent costly compressor failure.
