P0500: the vehicle speed sensor — when the speedometer lies, half the car stops working

Where the signal comes from

There are two generations of design here, and the search depends on which you have.

Older cars: a dedicated sensor on the transmission, mechanically driven from the output shaft, producing pulses.

Modern cars: there is no dedicated sensor at all. The ABS module calculates speed from the wheel speed sensors and broadcasts it over the bus to whoever wants it.

Causes by probability

On cars with a dedicated sensor

  1. Connector and wiring — the sensor sits on the transmission, in dirt and vibration.
  2. The sensor itself — the magnetic element degrades.
  3. The drive gear inside the transmission — worn or stripped.

On cars where ABS supplies speed

  1. A wheel speed sensor. Most often contamination with brake dust debris, or a damaged reluctor ring on the driveshaft.
  2. Wiring to the wheel sensor — it flexes with every steering input and moves with the suspension.

Working out where to look

  1. Read codes across every system. ABS codes immediately redirect the search to the wheels.
  2. Watch speed in the engine module’s live data while driving. Zero while moving means the signal is not arriving.
  3. Check whether the ABS lamp is lit. If it is, start there; P0500 will be a consequence.
  4. Note what actually failed. Only the speedometer suggests a dedicated sensor. Everything at once suggests the bus or ABS.

What it risks

Technically you can drive, with four caveats:

  • The transmission shifts wrongly — on a fixed schedule, harshly, sometimes stuck in one gear.
  • Power steering may stay in parking mode on the highway — light steering at 60 mph is dangerous.
  • Cruise control does not work.
  • ABS and stability control may switch off if the cause is a wheel sensor. That is a genuine risk rather than an inconvenience.

That last point decides it: if the ABS lamp is lit alongside P0500, braking on a slippery surface happens without electronic help.

What to do, in order

  1. Read every code, not just the engine’s.
  2. C-series codes or an ABS lamp → start at the wheel sensors.
  3. Neither → look for a dedicated speed sensor on the transmission.
  4. Inspect the connector and wire — the most common cause on both designs.
  5. Check the reluctor rings on the driveshafts if wheel sensors are involved.
