Run-flats: what you pay for and what you pay with
A tyre that drives flat sounds like a solution with no downside. What it actually costs in comfort and money.
A run-flat has a reinforced sidewall that supports the car’s weight even at zero pressure. The idea is attractive: a puncture stops being an incident. But it is paid for in several places at once.
How it works
The sidewall is reinforced with stiff inserts. On losing pressure it does not collapse under load, and the tyre keeps its shape.
Post-puncture limits are stated by the manufacturer: typically around 50 mph and a limited distance — “get to a workshop”, not “finish the week”.
Critically: without a working pressure monitoring system the driver will not notice the puncture. The car drives almost identically. So run-flats and TPMS are a package, not an option.
Upsides
No wheel change at the roadside — the main value, especially at night and in rain.
No spare needed — boot space and less weight.
Better control during sudden pressure loss at speed than a conventional tyre.
Downsides
Harshness. The reinforced sidewall does not absorb bumps — ride comfort is noticeably lower, and that is felt daily rather than once a year at a puncture.
Suspension load. What the tyre does not absorb is taken by the dampers and bushes; covered in the dampers article.
Price higher than conventional.
Repair. Many manufacturers do not recommend repairing a run-flat after it has been driven flat: the internal structure is already damaged. So a puncture often means a new tyre rather than a patch; the methods are covered in the puncture repair article.
A smaller model range, and not every tyre shop will handle them — they need the equipment.
Can you switch to conventional tyres
Technically usually yes, if size and ratings match.
What to consider:
- There is no spare in the car — you will need a repair kit or a space saver; covered in the spare wheel article.
- The suspension was tuned for a stiffer tyre; on conventional tyres the car becomes softer, which is usually welcomed.
- TPMS remains essential — it is equally useful.
- Never mix run-flats and conventional tyres on one car: different stiffness gives different axle behaviour.
What to watch in diagnostics
TPMS codes — on run-flats a working system is critical rather than desirable.
Wheel sensor status — after a tyre change they often need relearning; covered in the TPMS article.
The four wheel speeds — on an indirect system they are what detects a pressure loss.
Stability control codes — driving flat changes the rolling radius and the system sees it.
In short
- A run-flat holds its shape without pressure, but only within the stated speed and distance.
- Without working TPMS the driver will not notice a puncture — it is a package.
- The harshness is felt daily; the benefit arrives once every few years.
- After being driven flat, repair is usually not recommended — that is a new tyre.
- Switching to conventional tyres is possible, but then you need a kit or a space saver.
