Spare wheel, space saver, or sealant: what actually helps at a puncture

  • It has a shelf life — an expired bottle will not work.

When it is justified: as a temporary means to get moving when there is no alternative.

Plugs: the underrated option

A plug kit with a reamer is what lets you genuinely repair a puncture on the spot without removing the tyre from the rim.

Upsides: cheap, compact, harmless to the pressure sensor, and it lasts.

Downside: it takes some effort and technique; it does not work on a sidewall (nor does anything else).

Important: a plug is a “get home reliably” repair; the proper internal patch repair happens at a tyre shop.

The compressor

The most useful item on the whole list, and the one people forget.

Pressure sensors

After any intervention in a wheel, check the pressure monitoring system.

On a direct system (sensors in the wheels) a spare without a sensor gives a permanent warning.

On an indirect system (through ABS) a relearn is needed after changing pressure or a wheel; covered in the TPMS article.

What to carry

  1. A compressor — always.
  2. A plug kit — cheap and effective.
  3. A spare or space saver, if there is room.
  4. A working jack and a wheel brace that genuinely fits.
  5. The locking wheel nut key — in the car, not the garage.

Check them once a season, not at the moment of a puncture.
