Steering Angle and Wheel Alignment: OBD-II Diagnostics and Calibration
How to check steering angle sensor (SAS) through OBD-II, detect alignment needs, ESC errors after suspension work — practical guide for wheel alignment and SAS calibration.
Wheel alignment and steering angle are interconnected parameters. OBD-II, through the Steering Angle Sensor (SAS), can detect the need for alignment adjustment well before uneven tyre wear appears.
Steering Angle Sensor (SAS): What It Is and Why It Matters
SAS is a sensor on the steering column that measures the angle and rotation speed of the steering wheel. It’s used by:
- ESC/ESP — comparing desired direction (from steering angle) with actual direction (from yaw rate sensor)
- EPS (Electric Power Steering) — adaptive response at different speeds
- Adaptive headlights — turning in the direction of travel
- Rear-view camera — overlaying trajectory based on steering angle
If SAS is not calibrated after alignment:
- ESC “thinks” the car is turning when you’re going straight
- ESC/DSTC/VSC warning lights appear
- Unwanted brake intervention may occur

Connect an OBD-II adapter and open Live Data:
Steering Wheel Angle
- Driving straight: 0° ± 2°
- Turning right: positive value (e.g. +180°)
- Turning left: negative value (e.g. -180°)
If straight-line driving shows ±10° or more:
- Either SAS needs calibration after alignment
- Or the steering rack has play and the wheel isn’t centred
Steering Angle Rate (deg/s)
- Rotation speed of the steering wheel
- Sharp 90° turn in 0.5 seconds = 180 deg/s
- During straight driving: ≈0 deg/s
When SAS Calibration is Required
Mandatory after:
- Wheel alignment adjustment
- Steering rack or tie rod end replacement
- Hub or driveshaft replacement
- ESC/ABS module replacement
Symptoms of uncalibrated SAS:
- CEL or ESC warning light on dashboard
- ESC activating on a straight road
- Uneven EPS load (steering pulling to one side)
Calibration procedure: Varies by manufacturer. General algorithm:
- Connect OBD-II adapter with “Actuation Tests” or “SAS Calibration” function
- Set steering wheel straight (verify by driving straight)
- Perform calibration (usually 2–3 full lock-to-lock rotations or a command from the adapter)

C0450 / C0452 — SAS: Fault Codes
C0450: SAS: incorrect or absent signal
C0452: SAS: calibration absent or incorrect
Causes:
- Uncalibrated SAS after suspension repair — most common
- Damaged sensor (steering mechanism impact)
- Oxidised SAS connector
Indirect OBD Signs That Alignment is Needed
OBD-II doesn’t directly measure wheel alignment (it’s mechanical geometry), but gives indirect indicators:
1. Abnormal Steering Angle at Straight-Line Speed
If driving “straight” requires constant ±5°+ at the steering wheel → geometry is off
2. ESC Frequently Activates Without Reason
ESC compares Yaw Rate with what’s expected based on SAS angle. If SAS is uncalibrated after repair → ESC detects phantom understeer
3. Uneven ABS Load During Braking
If Live Data → Wheel Speed FL/FR/RL/RR differs during straight-line braking → probable uneven wear or incorrect alignment

Electric Power Steering helps detect the need for adjustment:
