Steam from under the bonnet: stop or drive on?
The decision has to be made in about ten seconds, and getting it wrong turns a cheap hose into a cylinder head. Here is how to read the situation from the driver seat.
White vapour rising from the bonnet edges is one of the few situations where the right answer is immediate and the wrong answer is expensive. The good news is that the decision is simpler than it feels.
The short version
Stop. Pull over safely and switch off the engine.
An engine that is boiling coolant is losing its ability to cool itself right now, and aluminium cylinder heads warp within minutes of serious overheating. The difference between stopping at the first sign and driving “just to the next junction” is frequently the difference between a $40 hose and a $2500 head gasket job.
The exceptions are narrow, and they are covered below.
Reading what you are seeing
White steam, sweet smell. Coolant. This is the overheating case and the reason to stop.
Blue-grey smoke, acrid smell. Oil on hot exhaust — usually a leak dripping onto the manifold. Serious but not instantly catastrophic. Related: oil leak diagnosis.
Steam after driving through water or heavy rain. Water evaporating off a hot exhaust. Harmless, no smell, clears in a minute or two. See driving through flood water.
Steam right after a car wash or an engine bay clean. Same thing — engine bay washing consequences.
The smell is the fastest discriminator. Coolant smells distinctly sweet. If it smells sweet, treat it as coolant.
Check the temperature gauge before anything else

That last row is worth stating. A coolant temperature sensor sitting in steam rather than liquid reads low, so a badly overheating engine can show a normal gauge. Steam plus a normal gauge is not reassurance.
Once stopped
- Switch off the engine. Continuing to run it is what causes the damage.
- Do not open the bonnet immediately if steam is heavy. Wait a few minutes.
- Never open the expansion tank or radiator cap hot. The system is pressurised well above atmospheric, and releasing it flashes the coolant to steam instantly. This causes serious scald injuries every year. Wait until it is cool enough to hold your hand on the cap comfortably — realistically 30 to 45 minutes.
- Look underneath for a puddle and where it is dripping from.
- Look for the obvious: a split hose, a spray pattern across the bay, a broken belt.
What it usually is
Split or blown hose. The classic. Often visible immediately as a spray pattern.
Failed water pump. Frequently accompanied by a whine or a wobble in the pulley — water pump failure signs.
Broken drive belt. On many engines the belt drives the water pump. A snapped belt also kills charging, so expect the battery light on at the same time. That combination is decisive: stop.
Radiator damage. Stone strike, corrosion, or an impact.
Thermostat stuck closed. Coolant cannot circulate to the radiator at all — thermostat stuck open or closed.
Cooling fan not running. Overheats in traffic, cools down at speed. A very characteristic pattern — radiator fan not working and temperature gauge fluctuating.
Head gasket. Either the cause or the consequence. White exhaust smoke and coolant loss with no external leak — exhaust smoke colours.
Can you drive on?
Only in one situation: the gauge is normal, there is no sweet smell, and the steam is clearly water evaporating after rain or a wash.
Anything else, and the honest answer is no. If you have no coolant, running the engine even briefly risks the head. Short hops “to get somewhere better” are how most head gaskets die.
If you absolutely must move the car a short distance:
- Let it cool fully first.
- Refill with water if the system holds it at all.
- Heater on full hot, blower on maximum — it is a small extra radiator.
- Watch the gauge continuously and stop the instant it rises.
That is a limp to safety, not a journey.
What the data tells you
If you have an adapter connected, coolant temperature and fan status are the two values that matter.
Normal operating range is 85–95 °C. Above 105 °C is genuine overheating. Above 120 °C, damage is likely already occurring.
Watching whether the fan engages as temperature rises separates a fan fault from a coolant loss immediately — and a temperature that drops sharply when moving but climbs when stationary is a fan or airflow problem rather than a leak.

Refilling correctly matters
Use the right coolant specification and do not mix types — coolant types and mixing. Then bleed the system properly. An air pocket produces exactly the same overheating symptoms as a leak, and a badly bled system will strand you again a week later.
Cost expectations
- Hose: $15–60.
- Thermostat: $20–80 plus labour.
- Water pump: $150–600.
- Radiator: $150–500.
- Cooling fan or relay: $50–400.
- Head gasket, if you drove on: $800–2500.
The last line is the whole argument for stopping.
