Coolant Leak Diagnosis: OBD-II Detection Before Overheating
How to detect coolant leaks through OBD-II: P0128 thermostat, P0116 ECT sensor, P0217 overheat — step-by-step diagnosis and causes. Catch it before engine damage.
Engine overheating is one of the most expensive repair consequences from ignoring warning signs. OBD-II allows detection of cooling system problems much earlier than they become critical — often before the temperature gauge even moves.

P0128 — Engine Not Reaching Normal Temperature
What it means: Engine has warmed up but coolant temperature stays below threshold (~80°C on most cars) for too long.
Cause: Thermostat stuck open. Coolant constantly circulates through the radiator and the engine never reaches operating temperature.
Why it matters:
- Fuel economy drops (ECU adds extra fuel for “cold” enrichment)
- Engine wear increases (oil doesn’t flow properly at low temperatures)
- EGR and catalyst efficiency reduced (both need proper temperature)

Detecting Internal Coolant Leaks via OBD
An internal coolant leak (head gasket, cracked head, cracked block) is harder to detect but OBD-II gives important clues:

Many overheating cases result from cooling fan failure. OBD-II Live Data:
