The thermostat: two ways to fail and two very different consequences
Stuck open, a thermostat never lets the engine warm; stuck closed, it destroys it. The signs of each and what diagnostics shows.
The thermostat is the cheapest part in the cooling system and one of the few whose failure has two opposite scenarios. So “replace the thermostat” without knowing which way it failed is wasted money.
What it does
It is a valve that keeps circulation on the small loop while the engine is cold and opens the large loop through the radiator once it is warm.
The purpose is to bring the engine to operating temperature quickly and hold it there. Operating temperature is not about comfort: clearances, oil viscosity, mixture, and catalyst function all depend on it.
Stuck open
The more common case, and the least noticeable.
The signs:
- The engine warms very slowly or never reaches operating temperature.
- Weak cabin heat, especially on a motorway run.
- The needle sits below normal and drops on the move, rising at idle.
The consequences: the engine runs permanently cold. That is exactly what the short trips article describes: fuel in the oil, condensate, carbon, higher consumption.
This is the insidious case, because the car drives normally, no lamps are lit, and the wear continues.
Stuck closed
Rarer, and more expensive.
The signs:
- Temperature rises quickly and goes above normal.
- The top radiator hose is cold with the engine hot — the key sign: coolant is not reaching the radiator.
- The heater is hot at first, then stops, once the coolant in the small loop boils.
The consequences: overheating with everything that follows; covered in the overheating article.
On the road: rising temperature plus a cold top hose is not “I will make it”. It is a stop.
A simple roadside check
- Start the engine cold.
- After a few minutes, carefully feel the top radiator hose.
- Normal: the hose is cold while the engine warms, then goes hot abruptly when the thermostat opens.
- Warm immediately — stuck open.
- Cold with the engine hot — stuck closed.
Take care around hot components and a fan that can start on its own.
What diagnostics shows
Here numbers beat the needle, which on many cars is damped.
Coolant temperature in live data — the key parameter. Watch not a single value but the warm-up curve: how many minutes to operating temperature and whether it then holds.
Code P0128 — the module itself detected that the engine failed to reach temperature within the expected time. That is the direct signature of a thermostat stuck open; the full treatment is in the P0128 article.
Temperature sensor codes P0117, P0118 — so a lying sensor is not confused with the thermostat.
Fan status — with a thermostat stuck closed it runs constantly and does not help.
Fuel trims — a cold engine runs richer, and that shows.
About heated thermostats
On modern cars the thermostat may have a heating element: the module forces it open earlier under load.
The consequence: an electrical part exists that can fail too — and then the codes point at the control circuit while the valve itself is fine.
In practice: on those engines, read the codes first and replace the part second.
In short
- Stuck open means the engine never warms; the wear is constant and invisible.
- Stuck closed means overheating; that is a stop, not a drive to a workshop.
- A cold top hose with a hot engine is the key sign.
- P0128 is the direct signature of a thermostat that will not close.
