Polestar, Zeekr and NIO: diagnostics on newer EV platforms

Three EV brands built after generic OBD-II stopped being relevant. What that means for owners, and which readings still repay attention on any electric car.

Why generic OBD-II gives so little

OBD-II is an emissions standard. Its entire mandated content is combustion data: misfires, fuel trims, oxygen sensors, catalyst efficiency, EVAP integrity.

An electric vehicle has none of that. There is nothing for the standard to require, so nothing is required.

Everything that matters on an EV — traction battery state of health, cell voltages and temperatures, inverter and motor data, charging diagnostics, thermal management — is manufacturer-specific by definition.

And the interface itself has moved

These platforms use Ethernet-based diagnostics and authenticated sessions, not the CAN gateway that a Bluetooth dongle talks to.

What still matters, on every EV

The diagnostic priorities shift rather than disappear.

The 12 V battery

The most common cause of an EV that will not respond, on every brand.

The 12 V system powers the contactors and control modules that decide whether to connect the traction battery at all. A flat 12 V battery immobilises the car completely, regardless of a full traction battery.

Battery health, read from the car itself

The vehicle’s own interface is the authoritative source, and better than any third-party tool:

  • Usable capacity or rated range at 100% against the original figure.
  • Charging taper behaviour at a fast charger — how quickly the rate falls off.
  • Energy consumption over a known route in known conditions.

Degradation is normal and gradual. What matters is the rate, and comparing against the original specification rather than against another owner’s anecdote.

Thermal management

EVs depend on keeping the battery in a temperature window. Signs of trouble: reduced charging speed, reduced regenerative braking, coolant pumps audible at unusual times, or range that varies more than weather explains.

Over-the-air updates

All three brands update vehicle software remotely. Behaviour can change overnight, a fault may be resolved without a workshop visit, and a third-party tool that worked last month may not this month.

The practical ownership questions

Two things matter more than diagnostic access on these brands.

Service network coverage in your market, and what happens if the brand withdraws from it.

Parts lead times, which on newer entrants can be long.

Neither is a diagnostic question, and both affect ownership more than any code you could read.

Being honest about expectations

If you own one of these and want a Bluetooth dongle that reads battery cells, that product does not exist for these platforms — not through app limitations, but because the vehicle does not expose that data through a generic interface.
