P0645 and P0646: A/C clutch relay control circuit
The compressor clutch is switched by a relay like any other high-current load. When the circuit faults, the air conditioning stops — and so does a lot of guesswork about refrigerant.
On a conventional air conditioning system, the compressor is driven by the engine belt all the time, and an electromagnetic clutch decides whether that drive reaches the compressor. Energise the clutch, the compressor runs.
That clutch draws several amps, so it is switched by a relay, and the ECU commands the relay.

Why this is good news
An air conditioning complaint usually costs money — refrigerant, leak detection, sometimes a compressor.
A P064x code says the fault is electrical, in a circuit made of a relay, a fuse and some wiring. All of those are inexpensive and accessible.
Before assuming a recharge is needed, check whether the system is even being commanded on.
The ten-second observation
Start the engine, switch the air conditioning on, and look at the compressor pulley.

The third row is the one to recognise: rapid cycling is a pressure problem, not a relay problem: P0530 to P0533 refrigerant pressure sensor.
Causes
The relay
First, always. Swap it with an identical relay from a non-critical circuit and see whether the fault follows: fuses and relays basics for owners.
Fuses
Usually two — one for the relay coil, one for the clutch feed.
The clutch coil
An open winding means no engagement even with the relay working. Measure resistance across the coil and compare with specification.
Clutch air gap
The gap between the drive plate and the pulley widens as the friction surfaces wear. Beyond a limit the magnetic field cannot pull the plate in, and the clutch stops engaging even though everything is electrically sound.
On some compressors the gap is adjustable with shims, which turns a compressor replacement into an afternoon’s work. Worth checking before ordering parts.
Wiring and connector
The connector is at the front of the engine, low down, in the airflow. Corrosion and stone damage are both common.
What blocks engagement even with a healthy circuit
Worth listing, because these are the reasons people chase electrical faults that do not exist:
- Refrigerant pressure out of range — protection logic, working as designed.
- Ambient temperature reading too low. Many systems inhibit the compressor below a threshold, and a faulty ambient sensor stuck cold means no air conditioning in summer: P0071 to P0073 ambient air temperature sensor.
- Coolant temperature high. The ECU sheds the compressor load to protect the engine.
- Full throttle. Brief disengagement under hard acceleration is normal.
- Engine idle too low, where the ECU declines the extra load.
The variable displacement exception
Many newer vehicles have no clutch at all. The compressor turns constantly and varies its output through an electronic control valve.
On those systems there is nothing to watch for engagement, and these codes do not apply. The diagnosis moves to the control valve and its command signal: A/C variable displacement compressor diagnostics.
The cooling fan connection
Many vehicles command the cooling fan whenever the compressor is requested. If the fan does not run, condenser pressure rises and the system shuts itself down.
So “the compressor keeps cutting out” can be a fan fault: P0480 and P0481 cooling fan relay.
Where to start
- Watch the clutch with the air conditioning switched on.
- Check the fan runs at the same time.
- Read refrigerant pressure and ambient temperature — either can inhibit engagement legitimately.
- Swap the relay.
- Check both fuses.
- Measure clutch coil resistance.
- Check the clutch air gap before condemning the compressor.
You can check this yourself. Pair an ELM327 adapter, open the free tier of the app and read refrigerant pressure and ambient temperature before concluding the compressor is dead. Both are frequent reasons a healthy system refuses to switch on.
