The sensor sits in the most exposed part of the car. Stone strikes, kerb contact and minor front-end knocks kill it regularly. After any front bumper work, this sensor is a suspect — it is easy to leave unplugged during reassembly.

Road spray, salt and constant temperature cycling. The connector is often unprotected and low down. Green oxide on the pins is a common find.

Heat soak, which is not a fault

Worth knowing before chasing anything. A sensor behind the bumper reads high after the car has stood in the sun or idled in traffic, because it is measuring air warmed by the radiator and the road.

The fixed-value trap

A thermistor circuit that opens usually reads as an extreme — often −40 °C or the top of the scale. Those numbers are not measurements, they are the default when the circuit is broken.

If you see exactly −40 °C, do not go looking for a cold-weather explanation. That is a disconnected sensor.
