Air conditioning: how to use it so it cools better and lasts longer
A few habits give more cooling and longer life at no cost. Recirculation, modes, and running it in winter.
Air conditioning is a system whose effectiveness depends on driver habits almost as much as on mechanical condition. A few simple rules make a noticeable difference at no cost.
After parking in the sun
Ventilate first, then cool. The air in a sun-baked cabin is far hotter than outside. Air conditioning cooling that mass works for nothing in the first minutes.
The right sequence:
- Open the windows for the first minute of driving.
- Blower to maximum on fresh air.
- Close the windows.
- Switch to recirculation.
Recirculation
In heat, use it. The system cools already-cool cabin air rather than hot outside air. That is both faster and easier on the compressor.
Do not leave it on permanently: without fresh air, humidity and carbon dioxide rise — the glass mists and the driver tires faster.
The sensible pattern: recirculation for rapid cooling, then periodic fresh air.
In winter recirculation hurts — it raises humidity and the glass mists more.
What extends the system’s life
Run the air conditioning in winter for ten minutes every few weeks. That circulates oil through the system and lubricates the compressor shaft seal. Without it the seal dries out and refrigerant escapes through it.
Many cars do this automatically when the windscreen demist mode is selected — so in winter the compressor often runs unnoticed.
Switch it off a few minutes before the end of a journey, leaving the blower on. The evaporator dries and biofilm cannot grow — the main prevention against smells; covered in the smell article.
Wash the condenser before summer — packed with debris it cannot shed heat, and there is no cooling in traffic.

What not to do
Do not leave climate control at minimum temperature permanently — the system runs flat out and never regulates.
Do not aim the flow directly at yourself for long periods — that is about health rather than mechanics.
Do not “preventively” regas — the system is sealed; if refrigerant has gone there is a leak, and regassing without finding it means buying refrigerant twice; covered in the air conditioning article.
About fuel consumption
The compressor takes power — that is a fact. But:
In town at low speed, open windows use less.
On the motorway, windows hurt aerodynamics more than the compressor costs.

What diagnostics shows
Climate module codes — temperature sensors, flaps, pressure.
Circuit pressure as a parameter on some cars — the fastest way to know whether there is refrigerant.
Fan status — it draws air through the condenser; not running means no cooling in traffic; covered in the fan article.
The compressor request from the engine module — showing whether the system is asking for engagement at all.
In short
- Ventilate the cabin first, then switch the cooling on — it is faster.
- Recirculation to cool down, then fresh air periodically.
- Run it ten minutes every few weeks in winter to save the shaft seal.
- Switching off before the end of a journey is the main smell prevention.
- Regassing without finding the leak means buying refrigerant twice.
