Your first OBD scan: a step-by-step for complete beginners
No mechanical knowledge assumed. Where the socket is, what to plug in, what the numbers mean, and the three readings worth checking on any car.
If you have never plugged anything into a car before, this is the whole process. It takes about fifteen minutes the first time and about two minutes every time after.
What you need
An adapter. A small dongle that plugs into the car’s diagnostic socket and talks to your phone. Compatibility is narrower than adverts suggest, so read how to choose an ELM327 adapter before buying — and be aware that fakes are common, covered in how to spot a fake clone.
An Android phone. The app runs on Android 7.0 or newer. There is no iOS version.
A car built from roughly 2001 onwards in Europe, or 1996 onwards in the US. Before that, OBD-II was not mandatory.
Note on connection type: diagnostics runs over Bluetooth Classic, not Bluetooth Low Energy. Adapters sold as BLE will pair with your phone and then fail to talk to the car, because the ELM327 protocol needs a serial profile that BLE does not provide. WiFi adapters are unreliable in a real vehicle.
Step 1 — find the socket
It is a trapezoid with sixteen pins, and by regulation it lives within reach of the driver’s seat. The usual places:
- Under the dashboard, above the pedals.
- Behind a small removable panel in the driver’s footwell.
- Beside or below the steering column.
- Inside the fuse box cover, or behind the ashtray on some older cars.

Step 2 — plug in
Ignition off. Push the adapter in firmly until it seats. Most adapters light up as soon as they have power — if nothing lights, see OBD port has no power; it is usually a fuse.
Step 3 — pair the adapter
Turn the ignition to position two, where the dashboard lights come on but the engine is not running. Then pair the adapter in your phone’s Bluetooth settings. The pairing code is almost always 1234 or 0000.

Step 4 — start the engine and connect
Some data only exists with the engine running — anything about combustion, fuel trims or oxygen sensors. Start the car, then connect in the app.
Step 5 — read the codes
This is the part everyone comes for. If the check engine light is on, there will be a stored code.
Write it down before you do anything else. A code plus its freeze frame is the only record of the conditions when the fault occurred, and clearing it destroys that. See freeze frame data explained.
Codes look like P0420 or U0100. The first letter names the system, the digits narrow it down: DTC code structure explained.
Step 6 — the three readings worth learning
Codes are the headline. These three numbers tell you how the car is actually doing, and they exist on essentially every vehicle.
Coolant temperature. Should climb steadily to around 85–95 °C and stay there. Stuck at 70 °C means a thermostat — P0128. Climbing past 105 °C means stop the car.
Fuel trims (STFT and LTFT). Percentages showing how much the ECU is correcting the mixture. Within ±5% is healthy. Consistently above +10% means the engine is running lean and compensating. This one number predicts a great many faults before they set a code — fuel trim explained.
Battery voltage. Around 12.6 V with the engine off, 13.8–14.6 V running. Outside that range, look at alternator charging diagnostics.
What not to do on day one
Do not clear the code immediately. The light going out is not a repair. The fault will return, and you will have thrown away the freeze frame that would have explained it. See clearing codes, when and why.
Do not clear codes before an emissions test. It resets the readiness monitors and the car fails on “not ready” — the trap described in P1000 readiness not complete.
Do not panic at a stored code. Many are minor. Severity varies enormously: DTC severity levels.
Do take the flashing light seriously. A steady check engine light means “get this looked at”. A flashing one means an active misfire destroying the catalyst — flashing vs solid.
Can plugging this in break something?
Reading data cannot. The concerns worth knowing about are narrower than the internet suggests, and they are covered honestly in can OBD scanning damage your car.
